For the third year in a row, The Nelson High School advanced drama class has won first place at the Virginia High School League State One Act Festival.
Their performance Monday at Monticello High School of the Kabuki-style one-act play “The Undercover Lover” earned a score of 298 out of a possible 300 points.
“We’re so excited,” said Diana Driver , the Nelson County High School drama director . “This is outstanding.”
She said everything about the 19 students’ production was “beautiful,” from the acting to the makeup. She said even the judges commented on the students’ level of professionalism.
Nelson also received three of the seven possible acting awards with Ben Cunningham, Whitney Whalen and David Withers each winning one.
Stuarts Draft won second place and Central High School won third. Stuarts Draft beat Nelson in the regional level of the competition.
Eight high schools participated in the festival. Each school had to place first or second in a regional festival to advance to states.
This is the third year in a row Nelson County has won first place at states and the ninth trip they’ve made to the state festival.
They’ve also placed second in two previous appearances.
“They were amazing,” said Driver. “Every performance they have progressively gotten better.”
