For a Massies Mill woman, the third time was a charm.
Idonia Oakcrum, 41, a certified nursing assistant at Lovingston Health Care Center in Lovingston, was named the Nursing Home Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year by the Jefferson Area Board of Aging on June 19.
This year was the third year Oakcrum was nominated. She said she wasn’t expecting to win.
“It just completely shocked me,” Oakcrum said. “I said, ‘They (aren’t) going to call my name.’ And then when they said it I thought, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe it!”
Oakcrum was chosen by the members of JABA’s Ethics Committee from a group of 20 nominees overall and four in her category.
The nominations come from all over the JABA Planning District, which includes Nelson County, Ablemarle County, Louisa County, Fluvanna County, Greene County and Charlottesville City, Beth Hochstetler, volunteer ombudsman specialist for JABA, said.
Each facility, agency or acute care unit in the district was able to nominate one nursing assistant who met the criteria of competence, caring and professionalism for the award.
This is the 11th year the award has been given, Hochstetler said.
Oakcrum became a C.N.A. in 1985, and has worked at the Lovingston Health Care Facility for almost 20 years.
She said she went to school to become a medical assistant but found being a nursing assistant to be a better role for her.
“ I just made a decision that I was just going to go ahead and be a C.N.A.,” Oakcrum said. “I just liked it. When you like doing something, it’s best to just stick with.”
Her favorite part of her job is the people, she said, and that every day is different.
“You can’t get bored with your job,” Oakcrum said. “Because every day is something different. You’re dealing with people and everybody is not going to be the same every day.”
Oakcrum was promoted to Unit Secretary of the Lovingston Health Care Center in January.
