The Nelson County School Board approved a field trip request at its Nov. 12 meeting from the Nelson County High School Advanced Drama department for 20 students to travel to New York City by train for a long weekend of touring the city in March.
Drama teacher Diana Driver said the students would leave March 18 from the Charlottesville Amtrak station on the 8:50 a.m. train to New York and return by 8 p.m. on March 21.
The trip will cost $15,000, or $750 per student, Driver said, which is less than trips in previous years because Driver is organizing and leading the trip herself.
The students will stay in Times Square, see Broadway shows and have a chance to do workshops with professional actors, she said. They plan to see the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero where the World Trade Towers stood, Chinatown and have lunch on Fifth Avenue.
“I am excited to take our students to New York City,” Driver said. “And experience the culture that is so rich in New York.”
The students are raising money to help pay for the trip. Last Sunday, they performed their one act “Tuna Fish Eulogy” and held a silent auction, with which they raised more than $1,000.
Driver said other fundraisers, including morning coffee shops, would be held.
