Wednesdays could get a little more “wild” in Lovingston after this week.
The Nelson County Economic Development Authority is hoping to bolster support for the Lovingston Farm Market, which is held every Wednesday at the Nelson Center on U.S. 29 in Lovingston, by developing a weekly evening event with the market and calling it “Mildly Wild Wednesdays.”
On this Wednesday, Oct. 7, the market will stage its first Mildly Wild Wednesday with live music performed by Byron Massie, wine tasting provided by Afton’s Veritas Vineyards, beer tasting by Devil’s Backbone Brewery of Nellysford and four different types of barbecue provided by the Basement Bistro of Lovingston.
Along with signs on the side of the highway, the Lovingston Farm Market has been using the popular social networking site Facebook to connect with local producers and customers.
Greg Kelly, a member of the Nelson County EDA, maintains the market’s Facebook page and sends out alerts and messages weekly to the “fans” of the Lovingston Farm Market.
As of the beginning of this week, the market had more than 40 fans on Facebook. Fans are people who have chosen to show their support for a particular product, person, place, thing or event created on Facebook.
“It allows you to do an immediate viral network,” Kelly said of the site.
Facebook members who are fans of the market can also post links to other pages, photos, discussion items, reviews of the market and other events all on the market’s page.
The market has been struggling to remain open since it began in May.
“Having (an event) late in the year, if it’s successful, could show some potential for next year,” Kelly said.
Kelly said that by making the farm market a regularly, well-attended community event each Wednesday, more people could join in and hold similar, complimentary events at the Nelson Center.
