Glascoe Stanley Ferguson Sr.

Glascoe Stanley Ferguson Sr., 76, of Faber, died July 30.

Born Dec. 26, 1934, he was the son of the late Glascoe Spencer Ferguson and  Sarah Louise McQuary Ferguson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances D. Ferguson.

Stanley is survived by two daughters, Sandra F. Mawyer and Dawn Marie Ferguson, both of Faber; one son, Glascoe Stanley Ferguson Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Faber; a special friend who was like a daughter, Laura Taylor of Earlysville;  two brothers-in-law, Allen Aldridge of Faber, and Hubert Eley of Calverton; four grandchildren, Donnie Mawyer Jr. and wife, Kelley, Bobbie Mawyer and fiancée, Megan, Meredith Mawyer and Logan Taylor; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Isabelle and Therron; and his special children, Katlin, Jade, Alexis, Peyton, Dylan and Huck.

Stanley was a member of Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church and a retired salesman with Sears of Charlottesville.

A graveside service was conducted Aug. 2 at Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church in Faber, with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating.

The family received friends Aug. 1 at his residence in Faber.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Mt. Shiloh Cemetery Fund 614 Shiloh Loop, Faber, VA 22938.

Elsie Kitchen Fitzgerald

Elsie Kitchen Fitzgerald, “Mama Cookie,” 101, of Lynchburg, formerly of Piney River, died July 26 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. Born in Nelson County, Dec. 20, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Frederich Kitchen and Mary Lena Harlow Kitchen. She was a 50-year member of the Home Demonstration Club, a past leader of Piney River 4-H, was a member of Rose Union Baptist Church and a faithful servant for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Elsie lived an incredible life, one that left lasting impressions on many people. As she always told her grandchildren, “we love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” Rest in peace, Nana. We love you.

She is survived by her son, Robert Fitzgerald Jr. of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Heather F. Covais (Jim), Hannah F. Castro (Lou), Christina Fitzgerald, Jonathan Fitzgerald, all of Richmond, Theresa Viar of Nelson County, and Jeff Carr of Amherst; nephew, Gerald Kitchen (JoAnn) and great-nieces, Rebecca and Laura, all of Alabama; and many great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Fitzgerald Sr.; and a brother, Willie L. Kitchen.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her many caregivers at Guggenheimer and for the hundreds of cards she received yearly. They were a testimony to the lasting impression she had on many.

A funeral service was held July 30 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home in Roseland, by the Rev. C. Randall Harlow and the Rev. John Campbell with burial following in Amherst Cemetery. The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Ryland (Chuck) Edward Mawyer

Ryland (Chuck) Edward Mawyer, 78, passed away on June 27 at Manor Care in Pinehurst, N.C.

Born April 11, 1933 in Rockfish, he was a son of the late Earl and Edmonia McQuary Mawyer. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Dover and Quentin.

Mr. Mawyer was a U.S. Navy veteran and a professional dancer for Arthur Murray Studios.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Moorefield Mawyer of Southern Pines, N.C.; one son, Tony Mawyer and wife, Joni, of Whispering Pines, N.C.; two sisters, Gladys Phillips of Powhatan, and Charlotte Bradley of Keswick; two brothers, Raymond Mawyer and wife, Peggy, of Richmond, and Donald Mawyer and wife, Becky, of Covesville; one sister-in-law, Janie Mawyer of Charlottesville; and one grandson, Brandon Mawyer of Whispering Pines, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 at Woodland Memorial Park in Colleen, with Clyde Mawyer Jr. officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston.

 

Benjamin Harry Powell

Benjamin Harry Powell, 79, of Shipman, departed this life July 25 at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a brief illness. Ben, as most knew him, was born Feb. 6, 1932 in Nelson County, a son of the late Harry B. Powell and Jean Harris Powell. He was a lifetime resident of Shipman, a retired self employed logger and timber man and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church at Elma.

He is survived by his sister, Cammary P. Scott of Shipman; as well as his devoted and dedicated niece and nephew, Barbara Ann and Russell Wayne, whom were his special caregivers for many years. He is also survived by a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins and last but not least his pet dog, Baby. A very special thanks to his other family members for their daily calls of interest and concerns as well as the doctors and staff on the third and fourth floors of the University of Virginia Medical Center.

A funeral service was held at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Vaughn officiating with interment in the Powell Family Cemetery in Shipman.

A family wake was held at the funeral home.
