Interest is still on the rise for the formation of a new Lions Club in Nelson County, and a little more than a month after its first meeting the group already has more than enough members to become a charter club.

The Lions Club is an international volunteer organization that focuses on vision and hearing screenings, diabetes awareness and community involvement.

After more than a decade of activity, the club has been dormant in Nelson County for the past three years.

The Lions of Nelson have a total of 36 members signed on, surpassing the 20 members needed to become a recognized chapter.

April Campbell, the Lions of Nelson’s elected secretary, said meetings will be held on the first Thursday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the third Thursday of each month beginning at 7 p.m.

Campbell said the next meeting would be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Board of Supervisors room at the Nelson County Courthouse in Lovingston.

The Lions of Nelson have also set a tentative December date for celebrating their charter member status, Campbell said.

Other elected officials of the Lions of Nelson include David Boor, president, Ray Uttaro, vice president, Brenda Mayo, treasurer, Mickey Quick, membership chairman, John Wright, official tail twister, and Ray Wright, official lion tamer.

The elected board of directors is Larry Wells, Daniel Rutherford, Frances Mitchell and Patty Avalon.
