The Nelson County Planning Commission recommended approval at its Feb. 24 meeting of a special use permit for a Nelson County couple to build a public garage where automobiles would be stored on U.S. 29 in Arrington.
Nelson supervisors get peek at ’10-11 budget holes
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors got its first peek at the projected budget for 2010-11 fiscal year at a Feb. 25 meeting and is now waiting, like most other localities, to see what the Virginia General Assembly’s next budget move will be.

The Nelson County Planning Commission approved a plan for the second phase of construction to be completed at the Virginia Distillery Co. on Eades Lane near Lovingston, at a Feb. 24 meeting.
Citing few customers, board rejects $1.7M to extend public water, sewer
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 at a Feb. 25 meeting to not accept nearly $1.7 million offered by the Department of Environmental Quality to extend public water and sewer lines from the intersection of Va. 56 and Va. 151 into Roseland.

Schuyler man to appeal five-day sentence from donation theft
A Schuyler man has been sentenced to serve five days in jail for stealing a donation jar for a man’s burial, but he is appealing the decision.

County delays making waterline decision
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors decided at its Feb. 16 meeting to wait for further information on funding before making a decision on whether or not to extend a public waterline from the intersection of Va. 151 and Va. 56 into Roseland to address groundwater contamination issues.
Projected budget has $480,000 shortfall
The Nelson County Public School system could see less state money in the budget than expected for the 2010-11 school year.
School day made longer to make up for snow days
The Nelson County School Board decided last week to add 20 more minutes of class time to the end of every school day from now until the end of June to help make up the 13 school days Nelson County Public School students have missed so far this year due to weather and road conditions.

Public School students hit 12th day of no classes
Nelson County Public Schools students haven’t seen the inside of a classroom since January because of the snowy weather and icy roads that have plagued Nelson County for the past three weeks, making it the longest stretch of days that classes have been canceled for the past seven years.
School Board approves more in cuts
The Nelson County School Board approved more cuts to the proposed 2010-11 budget, reducing the deficit from more than $900,000 to $883,000.

Update: Truck tips, turkeys tumble
Virginia 151 in northern Nelson County near Afton was closed for more than an hour today after a tractor-trailer carrying more than 800 turkeys overturned on the rural highway.

Lovingston brothers charged in string of car thefts
Two Lovingston brothers have been charged with more than a dozen felonies between them after authorities said they stole at least seven vehicles from Nelson County residents last Friday night during a winter storm that covered much of Central Virginia in more than 10 inches of snow.

Two French clubs hold coin drive to raise money for Haiti
The French clubs of Nelson County High School and Nelson County Middle School French are holding a two-week coin drive to help raise money for charitable organizations helping with the relief and recovery effort in earthquake-devastated Haiti.
