Johnny Thomas Brogan

Johnny Thomas Brogan, 61 of Roseland, died Oct. 21 at UVa Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 22, 1948, in Nelson County, a son of the late James W. Brogan and Mary Sue Powell Brogan.

Johnny was a member of Adial Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Robertson Brogan, a daughter, Rose B. Davis of Arrington, a son, Johnny Thomas Brogan, Jr. of Roseland, three sisters, Ann P. Thacker of Afton, Helen P. Snead, and Debbie P. Mays both of Faber, two brothers, James F. Brogan of Faber, and Roger D. Brogan, of Ruckersville, and two grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Oct. 23 at Bethel Church of the Brethren in Arrington with Pastor Stan Ogden officiating.

Interment followed in the family cemetery at the home.

The family received friends at the funeral home and all other times at the family residence.

Alice ‘Nanny’ Carter

Alice “Nanny” Carter, 87, of Waynesboro passed away Oct. 23 at her residence.

She was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Nellysford, a daughter of the late William R. and Melinda Puckett Truslow.

Mrs. Carter was a former member of Wintergreen Christian Church and was presently a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren. She was retired from Morton’s Frozen Foods with 37 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson H. “Bill” Carter on Sept. 20, 1988; a sister, Yyonne and her husband, Tommy Toms; and a grandson, Steve Carter.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Carter and his wife, Skip, of Waynesboro and Wilson I. Carter and his wife, Pat, of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Mary Davis of Charlottesville and Annie Patrick of Lovingston; two brothers, Herbert Truslow and his wife, Polly, of Nellysford, Martin S. “Buddy” Truslow and his wife, Gracie, of Waynesboro; seven grandchildren, Terry Carter Breeden, John Carter Jr., Renee Carter Hall, Bobby Smith, Michelle Smith Holden, Paul Carter and Randy Carter; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Annie Wood.

A graveside service was conducted Oct. 27 at Wintergreen Christian Church Cemetery with Pastor Edward Carl officiating.

At her request there was no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

Friends called at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes Oct. 26 to sign the guest register book.

Dorothy Wright Noel

Dorothy Wright Noel, 88, of Forest, died Oct. 22 at Runk and Pratt Residential Adult Care. She was the widow of Lawrence Melvin Noel.

Born Sept. 7, 1921, in Lovingston, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Benjamin and Selena Higginbotham Wright. Mrs. Noel was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She was a member of Christian Chapel.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Noel is survived by one son, Albert D. Perdue of Lynchburg; two daughters, Carolyn P. Owen (Dennis Dearing) of Forest and Betty P. Jones (Phillip) of Concord; one stepdaughter, Betty Lesher (Bobby) of McKinney; one stepson, James Noel (Becky) of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Christie Ryder (Randy), Tracy McCraw (Doug), Tanya Campbell (Scott), Chip Brooks, Kayla Jones and Travis Perdue (Amanda); and eight great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Oct. 24 at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Triplett officiating. The family received friends Oct. 23 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Nina L. Orange

Nina Lucille Orange of Staunton, and formerly of Waynesboro, died Oct. 10 at her residence.

She was born in Nelson County.

Nina was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church, the Waynesboro Moose Lodge Auxiliary, and the Eagle Aerie Auxiliary in Fishersville. She had retired as a special education teacher for Augusta County schools.

In addition to her parents, Ronald H. and Willie Lucille Merriam, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. “Jim” Orange, in 1996.

Surviving are her daughter, Sondra Lucille “Sandy” Sollinger of Waynesboro; her son, Ronald Edward “Eddie” Orange and his wife, Kim, of Fredericksburg; two grandsons that she raised, J.J. and Joey Sollinger; three other grandchildren, Robbie, Ryan, and Renee Orange; two sisters, Leone “Midge” Brown of Waynesboro, and Arlene Marino of Staunton; a brother, Edward McGann of Arizona; two great- grandchildren, Madison and Gabriel Sollinger; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service was conducted Oct. 13 at McDow Funeral Home by Pastor Billy Coffey. Interment followed in Augusta Memorial Park.

The family received friends Oct. 12 at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers were Wallace Clifton, Donnie R. Comer, Monte Cuthbertson, Earl Linwood Gibson, Micajah Hicks and William VanDevander.

Linwood Gibson III and Gabriel Sollinger served as honorary pallbearers.

Tommy Lee Scott

Tommy Lee Scott, 60, of Beagle Gap Run, passed away Oct. 16 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Nov. 12, 1948, in Harrisonburg, he was the son of Roy Lee and Ruth Harlow Scott.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired from the former Waynesboro DuPont Co. and attended the Church of Christ.

He enjoyed fishing and camping with his family and friends.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Ruth Conner; his brother-in-law and best friend, Thomas Quick; and a special uncle, Paul Ross.

Survivors in addition to his mother of Waynesboro, include his wife of 41 years, Linda Conner Scott; father-in-law, Curtis Conner; two sons, Travis Lee Scott and his wife, Kelly, of Waynesboro, and Tyler Scott of Waynesboro; daughter, Briget Hayes and her husband, Dennis, of Waynesboro; three sisters, Sandra Quick of Waynesboro, Barbara Guyer and her husband, Jim, of Burketown, and Linda Falls and her husband, Joel, of Roseland; grandchildren, Dylan and Jacob Hayes, Kayla and Zachary Scott and Autumn Dawson; Rebekah and Shannon Breeden, both of which he considered his daughters and were very special to him.

The family would also like to give a special thank you to Tracy Lam of New Market for his support during Mr. Scott’s illness.

A funeral service was conducted Oct. 20 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes by Pastor Gary Major. Burial followed in Augusta Memorial Park with military rites provided by Stuarts Draft V.F.W. Post 9339.

Active pallbearers were Travis Scott, Tyler Scott, Tony Conner, Matthew Smiley, Michael Smiley and Tracy Lam.

Honorary pallbearers were friends and family attending the service.

The family received friends Oct. 19 at the funeral home.

George Gilbert Vest

George Gilbert Vest was born on March 16, 1920, to the late Oscar William and Beatrice Baker Vest in Nelson County and was called to rest Oct. 21 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia at age 89.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Marie Brown Vest; a brother, Robert Louis Vest; and a sister, Maizie Cruzer.

He was a member of Mount Eagle Baptist Church in Nellysford, Virginia.

During his life he served in World War II, worked as a farm manager, worked at Morton Frozen Foods and was very instrumental to the development of the territory known as Wintergreen. He had a love for Wintergreen, for the land, the mountains, and the woods. He loved to hunt and fish. Because of his longstanding association with Wintergreen, he had long been acclaimed as “the man you ought to talk to if you want to know something about Wintergreen.”

He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Zand G. Vest of Faber, Virginia; one daughter, Patsy V. Rainey and Lewis of Brodnax; two granddaughters, Velona Smith of Brodnax, and Shelandice Rainey and Antwaine of Lawrenceville; two grandsons, Lewis Rainey of Brodnax, and Everette Harris of Charlottesville; five great-granddaughters, Aliesha Rainey, Reshawyna Walker, Zuri McCroy, Jasanti Rainey and Amyiah Marie Rainey; two great-grandsons, Jakarey and Tyekese Taylor; two sisters, Teolia Turner and Lorraine Harris; one brother, Ervin Harris; a devoted neighbor, Rebecca Drumgold; a devoted friend of the family, Mary Cowan; a devoted friend, Donald Faulkner.

A funeral service was held Oct. 25 at the Mount Eagle Baptist Church in Nellysford, conducted by the Rev. Glenwood Morgan. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Lewis Funeral Home of Waynesboro is entrusted with the service.

Grace C. Wells

Grace M. (Clark) Wells, 74, of Middlebrook Avenue, passed away Oct. 12 at her residence.

She was born March 6, 1935, in Nelson County, a daughter of Sidney and Fannie Clark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Wells Sr.; one daughter, Marion Wells; two brothers, James and Earl Fitch; two sisters, Bessie Salisbury and Emma Fitch; one great-grandson, Mion Venable.

Grace is survived by one son, Harold Wells Jr. of Waynesboro; one daughter, Connie Bell and her husband, David Jr., of Verona; eight brothers, John Clark of Philadelphia, Merlin Clark, Lamond Clark and his wife, Gloria, all of Maryland, Julian “Cornbread” Clark and his wife, Dorothy, Thomas “Fruit” Fitch, Robert and Kenneth Crawford, all of Staunton, and Richard Crawford and his wife, Carolyn, of Maryland; two sisters, Shirley Vaughn and her husband, Joseph, of Staunton, and Dorothy Bailey and her husband, Jimmy, of Maryland; special granddaughter, Tanika Y. Wells of the residence; numerous other grandchildren and great- grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The Rev. Michael A. Turner conducted a service Oct. 16 at Mount Salem Baptist Church. Burial was in Oaklawn Mausoleums and Memory Gardens. Public viewing was prior to the funeral.

The family received friends at her daughter’s residence, Mr. and Mrs. David (Connie) Bell Jr., 7 White Oak Drive in Verona.
