Voters will elect six local seats in November
This Nov. 3, along with voting for the next governor of Virginia, Nelson County residents will have the chance to vote for candidates for six local seats.
But the only local contested race in Nelson for this election is for the Central District seat on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors.
Incumbent and Democrat Connie Brennan, of Faber, is seeking re-election.
Her opponent is Republican-backed E. “Dudley” Campbell, 56, of Roseland.
Brennan, 65, is a retired nurse practitioner and has served on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors for the past eight years.
Brennan said she has already started going door to door for her campaign and she is running again because she feels there is still work to be done in the county.
“I’m running again because there’s a lot of wonderful things we’re working on and I’m not finished,” Brennan said. “I’m not finished working for the county. We’ve started some wonderful projects and I have some new things I want to start too.”
Brennan said she looks forward to any candidate forums during this campaign.
Campbell is a construction manager, a member of the Ruritans of the Rockfish Valley and a member of the Rotary Club in Nelson County.
Campbell said he is running because “it’s time to come off of the sidelines.”
“I’ve kind of peripherally been involved in politics my whole life,” Campbell said. “I’ve always had an interest. I just think it’s time rather than to be just interested, to show interest and get out there.”
Campbell wants to attract new jobs and businesses in the county and said he backs the schools “110 percent.”
The original Republican candidate was Campbell’s son, Edwin D. Campbell II, who dropped out of the race in August because he plans to move out of the county.
North District Supervisor Tommy Harvey, of Afton, is running for re-election as well.
East District Supervisor Allen Hale, of Shipman, and current Board of Supervisors chairman, is also running for re-election.
Mary S. Cunningham, of Afton, is running uncontested for the North District’s vacated seat on the Nelson County School Board.
Amy Clark Snapp, of Schuyler, is running uncontested for the East District’s vacated seat on the Nelson County School Board.
Margaret Clair, of Faber, is running uncontested for the Central District’s vacated seat on the Nelson County School Board.
To vote in the Nov. 3 election, Nelson County residents must register by 5 p.m. Oct. 5, Nelson County Registrar Jacqueline Clark said.
Absentee balloting begins Sept. 18 and the registrar’s office in Lovingston will be open Saturday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for absentee voting.
The polls will be open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 3.
