Govs grab first district win over William Campbell

Nelson County picked up its first Dogwood District football victory last Friday in Lovingston over visiting William Campbell as the Governors fell behind 8-0 but then rallied with 18 unanswered points and held on for an 18-14 win over the Generals.
William Campbell’s Brandon Adams scored on a two-yard run, and Marcus Alexander ran in the two-point conversion in the first quarter, but James Saunders pulled Nelson (2-7, 1-4 Dogwood) to within two points with a first quarter one-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Governors took the lead on a second-quarter, 43-yard run by Rondrell Smith to put Nelson up 12-8 after the extra point attempt failed. Bobby Barnett added another second-quarter score on a one-yard run and with another failed extra point attempt that put the Governors up 18-8 going into halftime.
Nelson was led offensively by Barnett’s 166 yards rushing. The Governors outgained the Generals in total yardage 321-263 and 240-194 on the ground. Nelson County had only one turnover to William Campbell’s three turnovers.
The Governors will wrap up their season with a trip to Altavista at 7 p.m. Friday with a chance to play spoiler. The Colonels (8-1, 4-1) are in a three-way tie with Gretna and Appomattox atop the Dogwood standings.
The Hawks (7-2, 5-1) will make a trip to Naruna to wrap up their regular season against the Generals (3-6, 1-4). The Raiders have wrapped up their regular season with an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 Dogwood District record.
