Rose Elizabeth Bortel
Rose Elizabeth Bortel, age 88, of Amherst, died Dec. 28 at the Lynchburg General Hospital.
Rose was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Philadelphia, Penn. A daughter of the late Norman Beetham and Josephine Fleishmann Beetham. Her husband Theodore Raymond Bortel preceded her in death in 1997. She is survived by her four children: Theodore Jr. and wife Maria of Plano, Texas,  Linda Schmidt of Wenonah, N.J., Richard and wife Betty of Amherst, Nancy Englund, of Kilgore, Texas, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Rose attended Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston. A funeral service was held Jan. 3 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating, with interment to follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens at Amherst.

Josephine Lincoln Evans
Josephine Lincoln Evans, age 81, of Arrington, Dec. 22 in Richmond.
Josephine was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late Ashby Abraham Lincoln and Julia Whitehead Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husband William (Billy) Evans, in 1985, and her five brothers and sisters. She is survived by two children Charles (Jackie) Evans and Betty (George) Hoffer, all of Richmond. She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church at Myndus. Besides her children she is survived by four grandchildren, Michael Emil Hoffer, Meghan Elizabeth Hoffer, Matthew Grant Evans and Graham Lincoln Evans. Also her sister, Nancy L. Wright, of Lovingston and her sister-in-law Hardenia Lincoln of Arrington and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Dec. 27 at Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Welch officiating with interment in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Dixie Lee Coffey Fitzgerald
Dixie Lee Coffey Fitzgerald, 68, of Tyro, died Dec. 21 at the Augusta Medical Center.
Born in Coffeytown, April 9, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Arnie and Nannie Elizabeth Fitzgerald Coffey. Dixie was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and was retired from the U.S. Postal service with over twenty years of employment. She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty years, Lester B. Fitzgerald. She is survived by her brother, Perry Coffey and his wife, Jan, of Roseland; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and a host of friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Dale Fitzgerald. Funeral service were held Dec. 27 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Pastor Billy Coffey and Pastor Mike Wells. Burial followed in Jonesboro Cemetery.

James Anthony "Tony" Johnson
James Anthony "Tony" Johnson, 35, of Evington, along with this wife Ashley died from injuries received in an automobile accident, Dec. 29.
Tony was born in Lynchburg, July 25, 1972. He was employed at Brookville Auto Parts and attended Blue Ridge Community Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack B. Power. Survivors include his mother, Patricia Stewart Neighbors and step-father, James Neighbors, of Lynchburg; two daughters, Alyson Sydney Ponton, of Lovingston and Brihanna Nicole Johnson, of Evington; two brothers, Ray J. Tyree, of Rustburg, and Ernest J. Tyree, of Gladys. Other family members include, Dennis Power, of Lynchburg, Barry Power, of Madison Heights, Allan Power, of Staunton, Jane Gallier, of Lynchburg, David Bennett, of Chatham, Bobby Bennett, of Lynchburg, Danny Bennett, of Lynchburg, Jo Ann Bailey, of Hurt, Tommy Bennett, of Bedford, Brenda Loop, of Lynchburg, and a number of other family and friends.
A funeral service was conducted on Jan. 2 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

Robert Kincaid Martin
Robert Kincaid Martin, 93, of Swan Road, Pamplin, died Dec. 29 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness. He was twice married, his first wife of 48 years was the late Virginia Parks Martin and his second wife was the late Oneeda Carson Thompson Martin. Born in Appomattox County, Oct. 12, 1914, he was the third of seven children born to the late Edward Kinckle and Mary Adams Martin. Rob was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church, a retired farmer and Grade A Dairyman. He was a former member of the Concord Ruritan Club and participated in the Young Hearts at Elon Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Anne M. Robinson and her hus-band, Richard, of Pamplin, and Luella M. Coleman, of Appomattox; five grandchildren, Donna R. Deaner and husband, Rodney, of Appomattox; Beverly Kim C. Horton and husband, Gary, of Laurinburg, N.C.; Sally C. Selden and husband, Frank, of Lynchburg, Kinckle Robinson and his wife, LeeAnn, of Pamplin, and Ronald M. Coleman, Jr., of Lynchburg; eight great grandchildren, Mathew Hampton Horton, Benjamin Michael Horton, Kincaid Martin Robinson, Jacob Coleman Selden, Miranda Kallan Deaner, Nathanial Lauren Selden, Parks Bennett Robinson, and Owen Robert Selden; two brothers, Beverly K. Martin and G. C. Martin and his wife, Eloise, all of Gladstone; two sisters-in-law, LayFaye W. Martin, of Gladstone, and Louise L. Martin; a brother-in-law, T. T. Martin, both of Appomattox; three stepchildren, Shelby Harper, of Lynchburg, C. R. Thompson, of Rustburg, and Ricky Thompson and wife, Nancy, of Concord; seven stepgrandchildren, Russ Thompson, Chandler Thompson, Savannah Thompson, Janet White, Jimmy Russell Harper, Stephen Harper, and Sharon Poach and seven step-great grandchildren. In addition to his wives he was preceded in death by a son, Edward Kinckle Martin, II; two sisters and two brothers, Marjorie M. Ander-son, E. Carter Martin, Sallie M. Martin and John A. (Jack) Martin, Sr.; a sister-in-law, Ellen M. Martin and a brother-in-law, Dave Ander-son.
Funeral services were held Jan. 1 in Olive Branch United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rebecca Rumburg. Burial followed in the Swan Family Cemetery.

William Eugene Pennix
William Eugene Pennix, 77, of Gladstone, died Dec. 27 at his home. He was born on May 18, 1930, in Appomattox County to the late Sampson Eugene Pennix and Mary Frances Turner. He was married to the late Roberta Fitch. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Betty Lou Harris and a brother, Theodore R. Pennix. He is survived by his stepchildren, Lewis R. Fitch, of Yonkers, N.Y., W. Kenneth Fitch, of Appomattox, and E. Marie Fitch, of Gladstone; three sisters, Shirley Baker, of Gladstone, Annie Parker and Frances Byum (Willie), of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, James Pennix (Louise), of Lynchburg; a sister in law, Georgianna Daniels; brother in law, John Fitch, of Baltimore, Md. and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service was conducted on Dec. 31 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. Troy Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mayo Junious Rose
Mayo Junious Rose, 98, of Union Hill Drive, Wingina died Dec. 27 at Lovingston Health Care Center.
Born October 12, 1909, in Wingina he was a son of the late Will Rose and Sally Bowling Rose. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sons Ray Rose and Clyde Rose. Mayo was a member of St. Johns Baptist Church in Norwood and a retired Section Hand with the C&O Railroad for 47 years. He is survived by two sons; William H. Rose of Buckingham, and Alpheus M. Rose, of Wingina, two sisters; Nena Ross, of Alexandria, and Ella Mae Rose, of Landover, Md. A funeral service was held on Dec. 30 at St. Johns Baptist Church in Norwood with the Rev. Rodney A. Sandidge and the Rev. James L. Rose officiating with interment to follow in the Peaceful Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Wingina.

Virginia Langran "Cookie" Wagner
Virginia Langran "Cookie" Wagner, 65, of Greenberry Drive, Afton, died Dec. 22 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Born May 12, 1942, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late James Langran and Anna Catherine Carter Langran. Virginia was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Massies Mill and a retired registered nurse in the Department of Neurosurgery with the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with 27 years of service. She is survived by her husband Charles M. "Mac" Wagner, III, a son Robert W. Brent, of Roseland, two daughters; Myra Brent-McGarry and husband Matt, of Shipman, and Susanne C. Brent and Keith McCormick, of Appomattox; two sisters Catherine Earle Gantt and husband Don, of Farmville, and Mary Vance Wingfield and husband Ray, of Appomattox, a brother James C. "Buddy" Langran and wife Faye, of Afton, and five grandchildren, Maria, Savanna, Laura, Virginia Corrine, and Monica. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Jan. 5, at Grace Episcopal Church in Massies Mill with Rector Judy Parrish officiating. Interment will follow in the Jonesboro Cemetery in Roseland.
