Civil War heritage
For those of you who don’t know, this year marks the beginning of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Virginia, its lands and its sons and daughters were all a huge part of the war from 1861-1865, and the sesquicentennial marking those events and people needs to be recognized.
The Central Virginia area and its people all played a role or were affected by the war and we should not forget or ignore our history. I encourage everyone who is interested to visit a museum, go to a local battlefield, go online or read a book in the subject and learn a little our history.
Many families in this area sent fathers, sons and brothers off to fight in the war and to defend Virginia, and their families suffered hardships while they were away. Many of their descendents still live in Virginia. Some are aware of the sacrifices of their ancestors, many are not and some don’t care. I encourage those who are interested in history to do some research and connect with their family’s history and the history of this commonwealth and this country.
Contact your local SCV, UDC or SUV groups. Many will find that they are descendents of Johnny Rebs who may have fought or fallen in places such as Manassas, Fredericksburg, Winchester or Lynchburg. Some may be Billy Yanks who fought on the same fields. Either way, we should take pride in our families.
The Civil War is part of American history, and the Commonwealth of Virginia and its people are a large part of what that war was. Let’s remember and respect all of those who served.
