Agnes Jane Sheffield Fishback
Agnes Jane Sheffield Fishback, 86, of Clayton, N.C., died Aug. 21 in Clayton.
Born Sept. 16, 1923, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late John E. Sheffield and Catherine Fitzpatrick Sheffield.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband (the love of her life), John R. Fishback, and her brothers, John E. Sheffield Jr. and Edward E. Sheffield.
While residing in Lovingston, Agnes Jane was a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of the Ladies Guild and devoted many hours to the church family she loved dearly. She gave of her time by volunteering to many organizations and families in Nelson County as well as caring for her own family during difficult times.
She was a former payroll clerk for the Southern Railroad in Washington, D.C., and a retired educator with the Decatur, Ga., school system and a very active member of the Lions Club of Nelson County.
She is survived by her devoted and dedicated daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann “Patty” VanWyck and Jay, who were the apples of her eye of Clayton, N.C. , and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral mass was celebrated at 5 p.m. Aug. 25 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Lovingston with the Rev. Daniel Kelly officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. Aug. 26 in Fort Lincoln Cemetery at Brentwood, Md.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the funeral home and suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Ladies Guild of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 375, Lovingston, VA 22949.

Ruth Evans Hatter
Ruth Evans Hatter, 97, of Amherst (Clifford), died Aug. 15 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Massies Mill Sept. 18, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Olen Linzy Evans and Mary Jane Snead Evans. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and worked for many years arranging flowers at Piney River Florist. Ruth had a “green thumb” and enjoyed caring for her roses and all her other flowers, as well as her animals. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joyce Martin Hatter; her first husband William McNabb; four children, Maggie J. Martin Hogsgon, Joyce Martin Hatter Jr., Kathleen Taylor and Chester McNabb; and two sisters, four brothers, and five grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Alvin Hatter (Elaine) and Martin Hatter (Betty), one daughter, Shelby Bryant (Earle) and one brother, Linzy Evans, all of Amherst; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild and many other loving relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held Aug. 20 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Beverly officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
Betty Lou Ivan
Betty Lou Ivan, 76, loving wife, mother and grandmother, of Perry, Mich., died Aug. 20 in a Charlottesville hospital.
She was born March 5, 1934, in Michigan, the daughter of the late Theodore and Cora Marguerite Hammond Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Terry Lynn Jenkins and Betty Lou Shellito; one sister, LaDonna Cords; and two brothers, Norman Smith and Theodore Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Michael J. Ivan of Perry, Michigan; her children, William Shellito of Schuyler, Virginia, Wendy L. Garrison of Waynesboro, Virginia, Teresa Kingrea of Troy, Virginia, Arthur Shellito of Charlottesville, Virginia, Daniel Lee Shellito of Gordonsville, Virginia, and David C. Shellito of Bancroft, Michigan; one sister, Judith Conrad of Perry, Michigan; two brothers, Duane Smith of Perry, Michigan and Richard Smith of Clare, Michigan; 27 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted Aug. 23 at the Teague Chapel with Pastor William Shellito officiating. Interment was in Perry, Michigan.
The family received friends Aug. 22 at the Teague Funeral Home.

James Riley “Jimmy” Proffitt Jr.
James Riley “Jimmy” Proffitt Jr., 68, of Lovingston, died Aug. 15 at his residence.
Born June 15, 1942, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late, James Riley Proffitt and Gladys Gillespie Proffitt.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann Pannell Proffitt, and a sister, Joyce Ann Stevens.
Jimmy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston and a retired construction worker from Whalen & Purdy Construction in Laurel, Md.
He is survived by his daughters, Cindy L. Proffitt, of Lovingston, and Leanne M. Proffitt, of Madison, Wis.; a son, Mark W. Proffitt, of Madison, Wis.; a grandson, Jordan Gray, of Lovingston, a great-grandson, Dylan Gray; and two nephews, Adam R. Stevens and Jay C. Quick; and a caregiver, Debbie Thompson.
A memorial service was held Aug. 19 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating.
Interment was in Mt. View Cemetery in Lovingston.

Hope Island Sayas
Hope Island Sayas, 68, of Arrington, died Aug. 21 at her residence. Hope was born May 19, 1942, in the Netherlands, a daughter of the late John Zijlstra and Jane Westerhoft Zijlstra. She was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Desert Storm, defending our country, and was a RN MSN nurse at UVa Medical Center for more than 27 years.
She is survived by her husband, Jacob P. Sayas, of Arrington, and her son, John P. Sayas, of Knots Island, N.C., and one sister, Margaret Hoekstra, of the Netherlands.
A service of remembrance for Hope will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Carpenters House, 1814 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Nelson County SPCA at P.O. Box 85, Arrington, VA 22922.

John Rogers Sims Jr.
John Roger Sims Jr. died Aug. 6.
Mr. Sims was born April 10, 1924, in Redstar, W.Va., and raised in Belle, W.Va. He graduated from Dupont High School in 1942 and signed up for the Army. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated from law school. He married Mary Frances Smith in 1951 and in 1952 his son, John R Sims III, was born. The family moved to Strasburg, where Mr. Sims became the general counsel for the First National Bank of Strasburg. In 1954 the family moved to Falls Church when Mr. Sims accepted a position with O. Roy Chalk and D.C. Transit. In 1955, his daughter, Joyce Rebecca, was born. Mr. Sims was known for his love of children and many were considered his “extended family.”
Mr. Sims specialized in transportation law, primarily before the Interstate Commerce Commission. He was active in the Interstate Commerce Commission Practioners’ Association, including two terms as president, throughout his career. John married Geraldine Bucklew in 1965 and moved to McLean and later Great Falls.
After practicing transportation law for 40 years, they began spending time semiretired in Wintergreen. Mr. Sims was one of the founding directors of Commonwealth Doctor’s Hospital and Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. He was active in Rotary International, where he had 50 years of perfect attendance. He was more recently active at Rockfish Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles, his first wife, Mary Frances, and second wife, Geraldine. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Rebecca, his son and daughter-in-law, John Roger (III) and Amy, and three grandchildren, Krista, Neil and his wife, Laura, and Rob; his sister-in-law, Nancy Sims, and nieces Toby and Elaine and nephews Michael and Phillip and their children.
Services were Aug. 16 at Rockfish Presbyterian Church, Nellysford. There will be a private burial held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Donald Joseph Thelen
Donald Joseph Thelen, 84, died July 28 at a local nursing home.
Donald was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Chicago, the second son of John Thelen and Mary Cicero Thelen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Raeder Thelen, in 1994.
He is survived by his older brother, Robert Thelen, of North Carolina, his brother, Kenneth, and wife, Diane, of Georgia, and his brother, Daniel, and wife, Marian, of Illinois, his children, Theodore David and his wife, Celene, of Lovingston, his daughter, Karen, of Texas, his son, Michael, of Richmond, and his son, Mark, also of Texas. He also is survived by three grandchildren, Jason Thelen and his wife, Marina, of Dallas, Texas, Erika Fennell and her husband, Jay, of Free Union, and Luke Thelen, of Charlottesville, and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Thelen, of Dallas, Texas, and Lio and Jed Fennell, of Free Union.
A memorial mass for Donald was celebrated Aug. 24 at St. Thomas Acquinas Catholic Church in Charlottesville by the Rev. Steven Alcott. Funeral arrangements are private.
