A Schuyler man has been sentenced to serve five days in jail for stealing a donation jar for a man’s burial, but he is appealing the decision.
The Nelson County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney confirmed that Wilmot “Bill” Packard, 49, was convicted of petit larceny Wednesday after a hearing in Nelson General District Court. Court records show Packard is planning to appeal to the circuit court.
Authorities have accused Packard of improperly picking up a donation jar in January that was collecting money to pay for the cremation of Russell Hudson. The friends of the deceased went to collect a jar at the Nelson Food Mart and discovered that someone else had signed for it and promised to give it to the right people.
The prosecutor’s office said Packard was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 25 days suspended, $40 in restitution and a $200 fine. Packard won’t have to serve the time while the case is on appeal.
