Improving care
Residents of Nelson County learned in December that the Blue Ridge Medical Center in Arrington would receive $5 million in federal stimulus funds.
The award, announced jointly by the offices of Rep. Tom Perriello and Sen. Jim Webb, will fund the expansion of the existing building to provide an additional eight exams rooms, an increase of more than 50 percent. As ground is broken this spring, needed construction jobs will be created. In the longer run, many more low-income and uninsured residents of Nelson and Amherst counties will be able to receive needed medical care. The availability of local medical care is crucially important to those of our residents who lack transportation or who simply prefer to be cared for by those who know us and our community.
With 600 applicants for grants for community health care centers from the stimulus dollars, we should be very proud that our center was one of 85 receiving much-needed money. It is a tribute to the quality of the Blue Ridge Medical Center and its place in our community. It is also, in large part, due to the support of Rep. Perriello and Sen. Webb that we received this recognition. Thank you, both.

Heartfelt thanks
The family of Elmo Bowling would like to say a special thank to the person or people who gave the large donation to purchase the AEDs in his honor.
That person or people knew Elmo very well. It was the perfect image of Elmo. He spent a large portion of his life helping people including his own family. Elmo’s favorite words were, “I will help you to do it.”
He was blessed to be blessed by so many people. Also a special thanks to Sheriff David Brooks and everyone who helped to make the presentation possible.
We hope the AEDs will save many lives but, if it saves only one we will be very happy, that the spirit of Elmo still lives. We are more then grateful. May God bless you all.
