Joseph Brown Carter
Joseph Brown Carter, 79, of Amherst, departed this life June 6 at his residence. Born in Nelson County on Jan. 18, 1931, he was the son of the late Charlie Edward Carter and Leice Brown Carter. Joseph was a carpenter and a retired bus driver for the Nelson County Public School System. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by sons, Joseph Leroy Carter (Edith), of Roseland, James Arnold Carter (Earsline), of Waynesboro, David William Carter (Laverne), Roger McDonald Carter (Lillie) and Robert Mitchell Carter (Kathy), all of Roseland, and Calvin Johnson, of Piney River; daughters Barbara Elaine Carter, of Roseland, Stephanie Diane Carter, of Amherst, and Vicky Toliver (Don), of Madison Heights; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to caregivers Carolyn and Donna for all their loving and expert care shown.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. H.L. Walker, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mary Virginia Dillard
Mary Virginia Dillard, 73, of Piney River, died June 6 at Lovingston Health Care Center. Born in Nelson County on March 25, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Goodwin Dillard and Lula Strange Dillard. Mary was employed with Conagra for 30 years, where she worked as an inspector and was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. She also enjoyed many conversations chatting on the telephone with her friends and family.
She is survived by a son, Russell Dillard (Betty), of Woodbridge; brothers Joseph Dillard (Ruby), of Waynesboro, and James Dillard, of Arlington; a sister, Christine Strange, of Arrington; a step-grandson, Bruce; a sister-in-law, Mary Dillard, of Waynesboro; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Carrington, Henry, Chestine and Emmitt, and a sister, Marie.
A funeral service was to be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. H.L. Walker, with burial to follow in the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour before the funeral service.
Clinton Codell Hall

Clinton Codell Hall, 78, of Long Island, passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home on June 3. He was the loving husband and friend of Etta Hall Hall for 55 years.
Born March 27, 1932, in Campbell County, he was the son of the late John Tyler Hall and Maude Dowdy Hall. He was a dedicated member of Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and owned Long Island Motor Sales.
He was the loving father of one son, Clinton Barry Hall, and wife, Sharon, of Forest, and one daughter, Kathy Hall Worsham, of Rustburg. He was the devoted grandfather gardening, fishing and hunting buddy to his four beautiful granddaughters, Jamie Nicole Hall and Rachel Ashlee Hall, of Forest, Dawn Worsham Bourne and her husband, Wayne, of Arrington, and Emily Jean Worsham, of Rustburg. He is survived by three brothers, Wyatt Hall and his wife, Margaret, and Lewis Hall and his wife, Elizabeth, of Gladys, and Garland Hall and his wife, Elaine, of Hurt; and three sisters, Pauline Lindsey and her husband, Byrd, and Viola Hall, of Gladys, and Martha Dawson, of Hurt.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, J .T. Hall, Percy Hall, Benjamin Hall, Buford Hall and Russell Hall, and three sisters, Margaret Cage, Ruby Rupert and Florine Roberts.
Funeral services were conducted June 7 at Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Mike Spence, the Rev. Alfred Hartsell and the Rev. Terry Wiler. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The family received friends June 6 at Finch and Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista, and other times at the home of Kathy Worsham at 415 Rhonda Road, Rustburg.

Phoebe M. Kanai
Phoebe M. Kanai, 81, of Afton, passed away on June 4 at Augusta Health.
She was born on March 15, 1929, in Nelson County, the 13th of 14 children to John Lacy Miller and Kate (Fortune) Miller.
She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
After living away for a short while, she returned home to care for her mother and father in their later years. She worked as a library assistant at Crozet before retiring.
Phoebe was known for her great love of cats, and took comfort in their companionship.
Left to cherish her memory are a sister, Lucy Johnson of Afton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be private.
