The Nelson County Planning Commission approved a plan for the second phase of construction to be completed at the Virginia Distillery Co. on Eades Lane near Lovingston, at a Feb. 24 meeting.

The Virginia Distillery Co. is home to Eades Whisky, the only premium whisky distillery in Nelson County, which is already home to at least 10 wineries and two craft beer breweries.

The first phase of construction, which began in 2008, included a warehouse, where the Scottish-style distillation equipment purchased in Turkey has been stored.

Jim Taggart of TCS Engineering Co., who was

representing the Virginia Distillery Co. at the meeting, said the second phase of construction would include a welcome center and the distillery itself.

The proposed welcome center would contain offices for employees, a tasting area and space for catered events and the distillery. The facility would become the permanent place for distillation equipment.

Fred Boger, Nelson County’s planning and zoning director, said the products that the company produces would be stored in a maintenance building on the site, which will be enclosed with a security fence and security lighting will be provided as per state and federal regulations.

Boger said the company has already drilled a well on the site and is working with the Virginia Health Department to determine the proper design for the disposal of the company’s waste.

“Our goal is to recycle 100 percent of the water waste on site,” Taggart said. He said that no water waste generated would be directed to the creek on the property.

Eades Whisky already offers three varieties of double malt whisky as part of its “anticipation series,” all of which were produced in Scotland.

The company also plans to produce six types of local single malt whisky.

Eades’ Highland label of double malt whisky is available at several Central Virginia restaurants, including D’Ambola’s in Afton, Devil’s Backbone Brewing Co. near Wintergreen and Thai Mex II in Nellysford. Bottles are also available at 66 Virginia ABC stores, retailing for just less than $70.
