Letters to the Editor - March 10, 2010

Today’s Pied Pipers
I’m writing in response to Bob Dewey’s letter to the editor in the March 4 edition of The Nelson County Times.

Since 1980, conservative rat administrations have run up a deficit of about 10 trillion bushels of corn. The rats’ followers have been feasting off those no corn tax increases and corn tax cuts getting fat, dumber and happier year after year. Never ever worrying who was going to pay that debt, those rats drove the economy into the ground.

In 2008, the independent and liberal citizens got tired of the huge deficit and hired Pied Pipers to get rid of the rats and to get the corn deficit in order.

The Pied Pipers knew from the history of the 1940s and 1990s that in order to turn the economy around it would take more deficits ’til the harvest was growing again and the deficit could be paid down. The Pied Pipers knew that it takes spending corn to fertilizer and increase the corn.

Immediately, the conservative rat followers came out of the woodwork, yelling about spending and possible corn taxes to pay off the massive deficit. The rat followers yelled “Do not increase my corn taxes! Do not take away my corn tax cuts!”

They got so desperate they even had eight conservative rat followers to challenge one area Pied Piper.

These rats were yelling and screaming, “Don’t tax my corn to pay off the debt! Take the corn from children’s education. Take the corn from children’s health care and welfare. Take away the school lunches. Pass the debt onto my children and your children. After all I am too fat, too dumb and now too disgruntled to help pay off the debt.”

The moral of the story to the conservative rats who run up deficits, some day the Pied Pipers will come, and you will hate what they have to do to correct your mistakes.

On a personal note, goodbye, Nelson County. It has been a great 10 years, and I will never forget you.

GORDON KOERNER
Shipman

So long, friend

Next month, this community will lose a person who has been a wonderful example of engaged citizenship. Gordon Koerner, long a resident of Shipman, is moving to Smithfield, his wife’s hometown.

Gordon defined what it meant to be an “active” Democrat. He worked hard in every campaign where there were Democratic candidates. He was a master at finding locations for political signs but always obeyed the law and also removed them after the vote.

This paper often conveyed his outrage at social justice issues and its own editorial stance. He contributed substance to the political debate in our county and his efforts inspired response from Republicans. Surely we voters benefited from this dialogue.

Anyone who has ever run for office knows how valuable the kind of selfless service he represents is. He will be missed, and public life in Nelson will be poorer for his leaving.
