Sludge hearing
I am writing to urge the residents of Amherst and Nelson counties to attend a public hearing on a permit for the land application of sewage sludge in Amherst County.
The meeting will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. in the School Board meeting room in the county government complex in the town of Amherst. The property designated for sludge adjoins the Piney River and lies less than 500 feet from the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail, which is directly across the river.
The State Water Control Board has recently expressed concern over the application of sewage sludge by proposing significant new rules, including larger buffer zones and new testing for harmful chemicals.
Further concerns include the smell and spread of sludge near a popular and well used recreational facility.
The smell will discourage trail use, particularly for health sensitive individuals who cannot take the risk of breathing the aerosols from sludge.
When comparing the cost of fertilizer for one field against the value to residents and county of a recreational facility that is heavily used, it would be a shame to see the investment of the county lost and the facility spoiled by stench and unknown hazards.
Please attend this important meeting and speak out to protect your county’s investment and the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail.
