Hazel J. Anderson

Hazel J. Anderson, 77, formerly of Afton, passed away Aug. 26 at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Faber, a daughter of Hannah Louise Marshall Gibson and the late Everette E. Gibson Sr.

She was owner and operator of Anderson’s Produce, an avid bingo player and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Anderson; a brother, William “Billy” Gibson; and a sister, Margie Scott.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her children, Wanda Brown and her husband, James, Richard Anderson, Jeffery Anderson and his wife, Dawn, all of Waynesboro, Diane Kelso and her husband, Mike, of Greenwood; grandchildren, Michelle Brown, Forrest Jones III, Tara Jones, Richie Anderson, Travis and Timothy Anderson, Michael Kelso Jr. and Bryan Kelso; great-grandchildren, Patricia, Michael Wayne III, and Rebecca Kelso; and a brother, Everette “Buddy” Gibson Jr.

A funeral service was conducted Aug. 29 at Hebron Baptist Church, 66 Tanbark Drive, Afton, with Pastor Todd Brown officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were family and friends attending the service.

The family received relatives and friends Aug. 28 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes and Crematory, 618 West Main Street, Waynesboro.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family, in care of the funeral home, 618 West Main Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980, to help with expenses.

Clyde Vinson Campbell

Clyde Vinson Campbell, 74, of Little Dogwood Road, Spout Spring, died Aug. 28 at his residence. He was the husband of Ida H. Campbell.

Born in Nelson County on Aug. 31, 1935, he was a son of the late Claude Conrad Campbell and Mary Sue Mays Campbell. Clyde was a member of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Susan Lynn Crawford, of Forest, Michael Vincent Campbell, of Atlanta, and Janice C. White and husband, Lee, of Spout Spring, and two grandsons, Stoner and Noah White.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, Generation Solutions, Dr. Robert Brennan, Dr. Larry Smith, and all the nurses on the third floor surgical unit at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Graveside funeral services were held Aug. 30 at Evergreen Cemetery, by the Rev. Adam Tyler.

The family received friends at Robinson Funeral Home Aug. 29 and at other times at the residence.

Margaret Virginia Donnelly

Margaret Virginia Donnelly, 89, of Waynesboro, died Aug. 23 at Avante of Waynesboro.

She was born on Jan. 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Rufus and Clora Fitzgerald.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Fitzgerald; six brothers, Herman, Theodore, Earl, Irving, Robert and Haywood Fitzgerald; and her first husband, Louis Hurwitz.

Mrs. Donnelly was retired from the hotel and restaurant industry and was a member of Waynesboro Mennonite Church.

Survivors include her sister, Frances Reznick Beasley of Schuyler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Aug. 26 at the Fitzgerald family cemetery in Schuyler.

Mrs. Donnelly requested that flowers please be omitted and memorial contributions be considered for the Waynesboro Mennonite Church Building Fund, 1801 Monroe Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980.

 

Agnes Jane Sheffield Fishback

Agnes Jane Sheffield Fishback, 86, of Clayton, N.C., died Aug. 21 in Clayton.

Born Sept. 16, 1923, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late John E. Sheffield and Catherine Fitzpatrick Sheffield.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband (the love of her life), John R. Fishback, and her brothers, John E. Sheffield Jr. and Edward E. Sheffield.

Agnes Jane, while residing in Lovingston, was a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of the Ladies Guild and devoted many hours to the church family whom she loved dearly. She gave of her time by volunteering to many organizations and families in Nelson County as well as caring for her own family during difficult times.

She was a former payroll clerk for the Southern Railroad while in Washington and a retired educator with the Decatur, Ga., school system and a very active member of the Lions Club of Nelson County.

She is survived by her devoted and dedicated daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann “Patty” VanWyck and Jay, who were the apples of her eye, of Clayton, N.C., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral mass was celebrated Aug. 25 from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lovingston, with Father Daniel Kelly officiating with interment following in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md. The family received friends at the funeral home and suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to The Ladies Guild of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 375, Lovingston, VA 22949.

Pearl Marie Smith Lacy

Pearl Marie Smith Lacy, 83, of Forest, passed away Aug. 22. She was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Nelson County.

In addition to her loving husband of 63 years, Edwin Lewis Lacy, she is survived by her brothers and sisters, Evelyn and Dixie Lattanze, of Roswell, Ga., Everett and Audrey Smith, of Goochland, Harold and Linda Smith, of Elkton, and Linda and Roy Watson, of Ruckersville; her sons, Steven E. Lacy, of Mt. Airy, Md., Jeffrey A. Lacy and wife, Cindy, of Evington, James D. Lacy and wife, Lisa, of Goode, Thomas M. Lacy and wife, Debi, of Lady Lake, Fla.; and daughters, Anne L. Wagner and husband, Ernie, of Forest, and Nancy Stewart, of Orlando, Fla. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was a longtime member of St. Thomas More Church, Lynchburg Art Club and the Timbrook Woman’s Club. She was an avid New York Yankees fan. She will be remembered for her generosity and caring nature.

The family received friends Aug. 24 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service was held Aug. 25 in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, with Father Richard Mooney officiating. Interment followed in Virginia Memorial Park, Forest.

Dorothy D. Watling

Dorothy D. Watling, 74, of Afton Mountain Road, Afton, Virginia, passed away Aug. 25 at her home. She had been battling two cancers and other various ailments.

She was born on May 6, 1936, in Augusta County, daughter of the late Willie Frank and Minnie Sampson Doyle.

She married Robert E. Watling in April, 1969 and was an LPN, graduating from King’s Daughters’ Hospital program. She worked as an LPN at Western State, the District Nursing Home and Eldercare of Charlottesville. She lived her entire life in the immediate area. She was a noted chef and had a passion for all types of plants. She would collect all manner of seeds and seedlings and plant at her home in Afton. This collection is amassed from the United States as well as from a trip to Ireland, Wales and England. Her husband and son were concerned the queens guards may apprehend her as she was picking through the royal gardens in London. To sum up Dorothy’s traits in three words, they would be, compassionate, kind and reverent for all kinds of life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by one sister, Helen Cole.

Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Watling of Afton; children, Debbie Henderson and her husband, Ron, Teresa Reese and her husband, Paul, Tina Twitchell and Mark Miller and his wife, Monica; stepchildren, Robert Watling, Edward Watling, Jessica Murray and Elizabeth Burleson; grandchildren, Morgan Miller, Shayne Sheffield, Tommy Brooks, Todd Brooks and Nathan Brooks; numerous great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Frank Doyle, Patty Berry, Mildred Higgs, Carl Doyle and Earl Doyle.

A graveside service was conducted Aug. 29 at Mountain View Cemetery, Fort Defiance, Route 865, Rockfish Road near Crimora.

The family received relatives and friends  Aug. 28 at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Waynesboro.

The family request that memorial donations be made to the Rockfish Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, 11000 Rockfish Valley Highway, Afton, VA 22920 or the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, 201 West Broad Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980.

Nancy Lee Wood

Nancy Lee Wood, 70, of North Garden, died on Aug. 25 at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

She was born on July 29, 1940, in Charlottesville, a daughter of the late Aaron Edward Ponton and Linnie (Farish) Dudley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a half-sister, Polly Comstock; a half-brother, Mandea Hurtt; and her step-father, Henry H. Dudley.

Survivors include her loving husband, Edward Siegel Wood Sr.; three sons, E.D. Wood Jr. and Michael Wood, both of North Garden, and Frank Sipe and his wife, Vicky, of Palmyra; a daughter, Sandy Herndon and her husband, Mark, of North Garden; eight grandchildren, Andreonna, Tiffany and Michael Wood, Brittany, Bethany and Brandon Herndon, Frankie Sipe and and his wife, Brooke, and Kristina Sipe; two great-grandchildren, Haden and Bradley McGuire; a sister, Barbara Pleasants and her husband, Freddie, of North Garden, two stepsisters, Mary Cottle of North Garden, and Martha Gray and her husband, Charles, of Afton.

Nancy will be fondly remembered by all those to whom she opened her arms and home through the years. She will be missed by her co-workers and the children she served at Walton Middle School who knew her as “Nanny.”

She left her family and friends with fond memories of her southern cooking, camping trips, Sunday and Holiday dinners, a lap to sit in, a shoulder to cry on, and a strong arm to hold you up. She will also be remembered for 52 years of companionship with her husband, Eddie, whom she cherished.

She will be missed dearly by all of her old friends and the new ones she made during her life here with us.

The family would like to thank doctors, David Morris, Gordon Morris, Tim Short, and Sylvia Hendrix, the entire nursing staff on the seventh floor at Martha Jefferson Hospital, the staff at Envoy at the Village, and all the friends and family for the support they gave to us and to her during these last few months.

A graveside service was conducted Aug. 28 at Alberene Cemetery by the Rev. Robert Price.

The family received friends Aug. 27 at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville.
