Building woes
After reading the article, “Construction cost growing,” in the Sept. 13 edition of the Nelson County Times, I began to think, “Why are we paying for all of these construction mistakes as taxpayers? Why is the county not suing the general contractors on these two schools, let alone allowing one of them to continue to work on the courthouse?”
Windows installed backwards is not an acceptable practice. No flashing around openings and penetrations is not an acceptable construction practice. No vapor barrier installed is not an acceptable construction practice. These companies cannot be allowed to say, “We didn’t know.” They were the general contractors responsible for the job; it was their job to know, that is what they got paid for.
For once the county needs to take a stand. Hold these companies’ feet to the fire. Hold the money that it is costing to fix the mistakes at Rockfish out of what is being paid for the courthouse. At Tye River Elementary School, the other company should tear off all of the existing brick veneer and replace it.
Don’t make statements about the cost of repairing the building correctly; make statements that hold the correct people accountable for their mistakes.
As a taxpayer, I would rather see the buildings fixed properly at a cost, as long as I knew the county was intending on going after those who committed the errors in the first place.
We do not want to have to go through this same process in 10 years because the buildings were not fixed properly this time.
