Theodora Fannie Jackson McLean
The Rev. Theodora Fannie Jackson McLean, was born April 23, 1929 in Massies Mill, Nelson County, to the late Deacon John Daniel Jackson and Deaconess Fannie Belle Smith Jackson. She departed this life July 22 at Saint Agnes Hospital, 900 South Caton Ave., Baltimore, MD 21229, after a brief illness.
The Rev. McLean was raised in a God-fearing Christian home and joined, and was active in, Oak Hill Baptist Church at an early age. Following her graduation from Nelson County Training High School in Shipman, she moved to Baltimore, Md., where she met and married Joseph Lee McLean, the love of her life. They were married in 1949 and they welcomed their only child, Joseph Lee McLean Jr., in 1952. Theodora and Joe were not blessed with any more children but they raised a foster son, Robert King.
Joe was a good husband and a good provider. He worked for Eastern Stainless Steel, from which he retired around 1983. He passed in 1985 from complications from lung problems. Theodora and Joe loved gardening and they built a home in Halethorpe, a suburb of Baltimore, where they were able to grow vegetables and fruits and share with friends and neighbors and the church.
Theodora and her husband, Joe, joined Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church of Baltimore, during the early years of their marriage. Later, in the early 1960s, when Theodora’s older sister, the Rev. Dr. Maude H. Coleman, proceeded to found Christian Unity Temple, Theodora and Joe worked diligently to found and build Christian Unity Temple.
Christian Unity Temple later joined the United Council of Christian Community Churches of Maryland and Vicinity and changed its name to Christian Unity Temple Christian Community Church Inc. and is located at 3900 Groveland Ave., Baltimore, MD 21215. Theodora was elected church secretary and Joe was elected a trustee and was ordained as a deacon. Joe held his position as chairman of the deacons and trustee boards until his death and the Rev. McLean held her position of church secretary for approximately 48 years until her death.
The Rev. McLean was a registered nurse who specialized in psychiatric nursing and worked for many years for the State of Maryland at several facilities, including the Spring Grove and Rosewood Psychiatric Hospitals. She worked a number of years for the University of Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at Spring Grove Hospital. She received her RN degree from Baltimore City Community College in 1978 and also received a BS degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. After retiring from the State of Maryland as a nurse, she kept her nursing license current and regularly worked part-time for Catholic Charities up until her recent illness which started around April 2011. She worked at various facilities, including St. Ann’s Day Care; St. Elizabeth’s and Almost Home Day Care facilities.
From childhood, Theodora was always a caring and compassionate person; always doing everything she could to help others. Rev. McLean was always an ardent worker and supporter of Christian Unity Temple. No job was ever too menial for her to perform. She worked in the kitchen, cooking and serving meals, sang on the choirs, headed the Nurses’ Unit and the Kitchen Committee. She visited and served communion to the sick and shut-ins; did the grocery shopping, transported parishioners and others to worship services, etc. and consistently gave of her time and money without ever seeking or wanting recognition or reward. She seemingly had boundless energy and could work circles around people a generation younger than she was. As a nurse, she usually worked in a supervisory capacity and when she was on a shift, several of her co-workers were known to say, “We’re going to have to really work today because McLean (or Dora, as she was often called) is on today.”
She was exacting in seeing that all rules and orders were followed and that patients were properly cared for and that health department guidelines and rules were properly followed, no matter where she was working. Whenever the kitchen was open at Christian Unity Temple, Rev. McLean would always be the first to arrive and the last to leave. She was a stickler for seeing that everything was clean and sanitized and that food was properly stored, handled and prepared according to Health Department guidelines.
During this time of working with Christian Unity Temple, Theodora was inspired to go into the ministry and was ordained by both Christian Unity Temple and the United Council of Christian Community Churches of Maryland and Vicinity.
Theodora received a BS in Theology from the New Hope Bible Crusade College and Seminary Inc., of Baltimore, Md. She held a BS in Nursing and is listed in Who’s Who in American Nursing. She was also certified and licensed by the State of Maryland to manage and supervise a commercial kitchen and was the Food Service Manager at Christian Unity Temple.
The Rev. McLean is the sixth in a family of 10 and six of her siblings predeceased her, including three sisters, Evelyn Epps, Maude Coleman and Alice Richardson; and three brothers, Wythers Jackson, John (Nate) Jackson and Donald L. Jackson. Included among the deceased is also her foster son, Robert King. She leaves to mourn their loss her son, Joseph Lee McLean Jr.; two grandchildren, Joseph McLean III and Janelle McLean; two sisters, Eunice Chatman and Florine Robinson-Amin (Sakib); one brother, Howard E. Jackson (Gwendolyn); plus a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held July 29 at Christian Unity Temple Christian Community Church Inc., 3900 Groveland Ave., Baltimore, MD 21215, with eulogy by Pastor Howard E. Jackson. Interment took place in Arbutus Memorial Park, 1101 Sulphur Spring Road, Arbutus, MD 21227.
