Smyth a true friend of Nelson

Nelson County lost one of its best friends when Gordon Smyth died in Charlottesville.

We first got to know Gordon when L.F. Payne asked him to join the board of the Nelson County Community Development Foundation, which builds and renovates houses for low-income people. His common sense helped us through some difficult times.

He was a former executive at DuPont, and his generosity helped not only NCCDF but a number of other community organizations — in particular the Nelson County Education Foundation.

Each year, dating back to the 1980s, he and his wife, Mary Beth, have provided funding for hundreds of mini-grants to teachers and scholarship aid for students.

They have also sent a number of teachers on "trips of a lifetime" to help them develop professionally.

The Smyths were also instrumental in turning the old Lovingston Elementary School into the Nelson Center, and they helped with the building programs at Rockfish Presbyterian Church and Oakland, Nelson County’s Museum of Rural History.

Many other individuals and organizations are the beneficiaries of their generosity.

He will long be remembered by many people as a wonderful, generous man of uncommon decency.

Thanks from candidate

I would like to thank everyone who turned out to vote Nov. 8 in the South District. It was great to speak with so many of you again and hear your words of encouragement.

I am thankful to all those individuals who worked on my campaign. Whether placing signs, speaking with friends or offering financial support, you were all invaluable in this process. I would like to especially thank those of you who were willing to place your confidence in me and elect me your next representative on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors.

As your supervisor, I will focus on the needs of the South District and will work with the other supervisors to make Nelson County a prosperous place. It is my goal to serve you with integrity and to the best of my ability. I welcome your comments and suggestions throughout my time of service.

Thank you again, and I look forward to serving you.
