William ‘Billy’ Clarence Bragg
William “Billy” Clarence Bragg, 59, life-long resident of Piney River, passed away after a short illness on Nov. 7.
Born Nov. 17, 1951, he was the beloved son of the late Horace Andrew Bragg and Marion Wright Bragg, and nephew of the late William (Bill) Wright. Billy attended Central Virginia Community College and his parents’ alma mater, Lynchburg College. He is a former employee of General Medical in Lynchburg. Billy was known for his friendly smile and his talent as a bass guitar player. He performed in several bands during his life, playing for dances for colleges in Virginia and North Carolina, as well as for other special events in the area.
Billy is survived by a sister, Jean Bragg Ballard and her husband, Bill, of Aylett; a brother, Lewis Andrew Bragg and his wife, Sharon, of Charlottesville; three nephews, Justin and Aaron Ballard, of Mechanicsville, and Blake Ballard of Aylett; one niece, Mari Ballard of Virginia Beach; and life-long friends, Diane Turner of Shipman, and her daughter, Krissi Turner, M.D., of Massashusetts.
In addition to his parents and uncle, he also leaves behind many cousins in Huddleston, Lynchburg and Waynesboro who will miss his kind ways.
A funeral service was conducted Nov. 12 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home in Roseland.
Zane M. Campbell ‘Marjorie’
Zane M. Campbell “Marjorie,” 79, of Amherst, died Nov. 2 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Cecil E. Campbell Sr. Born June 13, 1932, in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late Josephus Mays and the late Cora Etta Mays Mays.
Mrs. Campbell was a homemaker and a member of Kingswood Baptist Church in Arrington.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by one son, Cecil E. Campbell Jr.; one daughter, Wanda Ann Tyree; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by two daughters, Doris Tolley and her husband, Roy, and Angie Gunter and her husband, Tony, all of Amherst; one son Dennis Campbell of Amherst; one daughter-in-law, Pam Campbell of Amherst; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Maxine Washington and Marie Branham.
A funeral service was conducted Nov. 7 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Carroll Martin Jr. officiating. Interment followed in Amherst Cemetery. The family received friends Nov. 7 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence of Roy and Doris Tolley.
John (Jack) R. Chittenden
John (Jack) R. Chittenden, 72, of Wingina, passed away Nov. 6 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Heleane Bragdon Chittenden; and son, Russell Blaine Chittenden.
He was born June 9, 1939 in Gilford, Conn. Jack served his country in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force for a total of 21 years. He served in Special Forces and served 2½ years in Vietnam. Jack earned four Good Conduct Medals, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal w/14 OLC, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Valorous Unit Award, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Harborcraft Operations Course. Jack also served his state for 18 years as a Deputy Sheriff in York County,. He received a commendation for outstanding dedicated service in 1979.
Jack is survived by his wife, Marjorie L. Chittenden; his children, two sons, John Chittenden of Gloucester Point and Alan Chittenden of Grafton, and two daughters, Shannon Chittenden and Barbara Garrett, of Gloucester Point; step-children, Greg Coats, Mary Garmon Coats and Billy Coats, all of Texas, and step-daughter, Shar Nell Coats of Oklahoma. He is also survived by one grandson, Owen Keith of Gloucester Point; one granddaughter, Erin Garrett of Georgia; two step-grandsons, Russell Crume and Ryan Crume, of Oklahoma; and one step-granddaughter, Rebecca Baumgardner of Oklahoma.
Jack is survived by four siblings, two sisters, Karen and Ted Dyndiuk, and Julie and Rick Hunt, and two brothers, Tommy Chittenden and Jay Chittenden, all of Connecticut; and two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, all of Texas. He is also survived by his step-mother, Jean Chittenden of Durham, Conn.
Visitation was held Nov. 11 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston.
A memorial service was held Nov. 13 at the home of good friends Bill and Linda Winfree, at 566 Allens Mill Road, Yorktown.

Janie Simpson Drumheller
Janie Simpson Drumheller, 89, passed away at Summit Health & Rehabilitation in Lynchburg. She was the beloved wife of the late Franklin Eugene Drumheller Sr. who died in 1985. Born May 11, 1922 in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late Nora Wade Simpson and the late Cassins Lee Simpson.
She is survived by two sons, Frank E. Drumheller Jr. and wife, Gloria, of Troy, Mich., and Danny L. Drumheller and wife, Sue, of Amherst; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Phyllis Burks and her husband, Glenn, of Lynchburg; and a devoted nephew, Johny Roberts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly D. Harlow, who died in March 2008.
She was a retired employee of Lynchburg Training School and a member of Sandy Bottom Christian Church.

Dwight Edward Drummond
Dwight Edward Drummond, 64, of Madison Heights, passed away Nov. 10.
Born Aug. 31, 1947, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Roy and Beverly Crawford Drummond.
Survivors include his son, Brian Drummond (Traci Crager) of Madison Heights; his sister, Linda Brown and husband, Ted, of Hardyville; his brother, Roy Paige Drummond of Mineral; granddaughter, Rayna Leigh Drummond; two special friends, Katherine Johns Drummond Murphy of Amherst, and Bernard Davis of Louisville, Ky.; his beloved dog, “Molly”; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family received friends Nov. 13 for a celebration of Mr. Drummond’s life, at the residence of his son, Brian, 637 Old Wright Shop Road, in Madison Heights.
Kathleen W. Ferguson
Kathleen Wood Campbell Ferguson, 90, of Lowesville, died Nov. 5 at Lovingston Health Care Center. Born in Nelson County (Woodson) Feb. 15, 1921 she was a daughter of the late Harry and Addie Cook Wood.
Kathleen was a member of Piney River Baptist Church where she was active in the WMU and the Women’s Auxiliary. She was also retired from Dominion Stone.
She is survived by sons, Alvis Campbell and wife, Colleen, of Brandy Station, and Ronald Campbell and wife, Pam, of Shipman; brother, Charlie W. Wood Sr. and wife, Burnell, of Goshen; sister, Frances Mays and husband, Richard, of Alexandria; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husbands, Oren E. Campbell and Lewis T. Ferguson Sr; brothers, William and James; and sisters, Louise, Jessie and Barbara.
A funeral service was conducted Nov. 7 at Piney River Baptist Church by the Rev. W.T. Wright, the Rev. Charlie W. Wood Jr. and the Rev. Jason Canipe with burial following in Amherst Cemetery. The family received friends Nov. 6 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.

Astrid Fenger Lawler
Astrid Fenger Lawler, 88, of Galveston, Texas, and formerly of Shipman, died Nov. 8 in Galveston. Astrid was born on May 22, 1923 in Denmark, Norway, a daughter of the late Oluf P. Steen and Ellen Fenger Steen. Besides her parents, both husbands, Niels Olsen and Martin Lawler, preceded her in death as well as her sister, Marie Steen. She was born of the Lutheran faith and upon moving to Nelson County became a member of the Nelson United Methodist Church but was faithful to many other faiths and churches in Nelson County. She was a retired employee of the Marriot Corporation and was a active member of the Lioness Club of Nelson County until her health failed her.
She is survived by her daughter, Kirsten Hilliard and husband, David, of Lovingston; her sons, Peter Olsen of Galveston, Texas, and John Olsen of Falls Church; a brother, Terkel Steen of Denmark; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston.
William Norman Moxley
William Norman Moxley, 80, went home to be with his Lord on Nov. 4. He was born Nov. 11, 1931, the son of the late Grace Wagner and Hida Burks Moxley of Glasgow.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Emily Morgan Moxley; and children, Virginia M. Anderson and husband, John, of Lovingston, Chris Moxley and wife, Lucie, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Joseph Moxley and wife, Laura, of Leander, Texas; grandchildren, Rebecca Anderson, Ben Miller, Christopher Moxley, Kristy, Scott Moxley, Emily P. Moxley and Harper Moxley; a great-granddaughter, Grace Moxley; and a number of devoted nieces and nephews.
Mr. Moxley was educated in Virginia public schools and received B.S. and Masters degrees from Texas A&M University, Commerce, Texas. He taught mathematics and physics in Texas and Virginia for nearly 30 years. Mr. Moxley was a Korean War veteran, serving his country in the United States Air Force. He had been a dutiful member of the Roseland Rescue Squad and the Nelson County Rescue Squad for many years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston.
Funeral services were conducted Nov. 7 at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, with the Rev. A.C. Smith officiating. Interment followed in Woodland Memorial Park in Arrington.
The family received friends Nov. 6 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund; or the Nelson County Rescue Squad or the Roseland Rescue Squad.

Jean Borowski Popielarz
Jean Borowski Popielarz, 93, of Shipman, died Nov. 14 at her residence.
Born Sept. 22,1918 in New York, she was the daughter of the late Leon Borowski and Stephania Boginski Borowski.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband. Edward Popielarz; and her son, Ronald Edward Popielarz.
Jean was a retired inspector in the garment industry.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Popielarz of Shipman; five grandchildren, Mary Catherine (Missy) Wade of Shipman, Ann Marie Read of LaGrangeville, N.Y,; Stephanie R. Popielarz of Alexandria, Richard M. Popielarz of Maidens, and Matthew E. Popielarz of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was conducted Nov. 18 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Daniel Kelly officiating. Interment followed in the Popielarz Family Cemetery in Shipman.
A rosary service was held Nov. 17 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel. The family received friends immediately following the service.
