Humane society isn’t animal control

On Nov. 17, the Nelson County Times ran the misleading headline "County Looks into Problems at Shelter."

In actuality, the state has charged Nelson County, specifically Nelson County Animal Control, with violations of euthanasia regulations. The state is "looking into" the county. The county appears to be "looking into" a plea deal to reduce its $112,000 fine.

We want to reassure the public that the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County is a nonprofit organization, with no connection to Nelson County Animal Control (NCAC) — the department that runs the county’s shelter/pound. We operate Almost Home Pet Adoption Center as a "no-kill" shelter; we oppose euthanasia except in cases of terminal illness/injury or extreme aggression. We transfer as many animals as possible from NCAC to Almost Home and through cooperation with NCAC staff, we have taken 229 dogs and 136 cats from NCAC so far in 2011.

We would like to see the county operate on a "no-kill" basis. You can help by adopting an animal directly from the NCAC facility on Morse Lane in Arrington.

BETTE GRAHAME

Thanks for support

Thank you. It is an honor and privilege to have been elected to become the next commonwealth’s attorney for Nelson County. I want to thank my wife, Stephanie, my parents and sister, and my in-laws for their love and support during the campaign.

I also want to thank Tom and Phil Proulx of Afton; Janet Hunter and the Democratic Party of Nelson County for their help; and Mary Lee Embrey for serving as my treasurer. There are many other people that I would like to name, but there are simply too many to list in a letter. I really enjoyed visiting different churches, civic organizations and going to people’s homes during the last year. Nelson County is truly a great place to live and raise a family.

Regardless of political party, crime affects everyone. I will continue to do my best to help victims of crime and law enforcement in our courts just as I have done as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney.

Please feel free to come by my office or contact me at any time. I look forward to serving you.

Thanks from the candidate

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of Nelson County for electing me as their next treasurer. I have worked very hard over the past 18½ years as a deputy treasurer both professionally and personally to establish trust with the residents of Nelson. I am both honored and humbled to receive this promotion by the voters.

I owe a huge thank you to the businesses and individuals who chose to display yard signs and vehicle magnets in their support of my campaign. I also would like to thank my family, my coworkers, my Riverbank Church family, the individuals who worked the polls, the folks who spent hours making yard signs, the financial contributors, my friends who took their time to introduce me to their neighbors and my fellow Democrats. My success would not have been possible without any of these people.

I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Nelson County.
