The Nelson County Board of Supervisors approved the construction of a 140-foot tower for a turbine that will turn wind into electricity for a residence in Faber.
The small wind energy system will be built on property of more than 175 acres owned by Barton Biggs along River Road. Supervisors approved the tower at their Sept. 13 meeting.
The wind energy system will be white and yellow in color and will be 140 feet tall, Fred Boger, the planning and zoning director for Nelson County, said.
Dan Boyle, a consultant with Central Virginia Wind Energy who was representing Biggs, said the tower would reach 153 feet in height with the blades fully extended.
“We have a site where the trees in the area are 100 feet tall and in order to put it up responsibly, the blades need to be 30 feet above the trees,” he said.
At the Nelson County Planning Commission meeting in August, Boger said the wind turbine could be visible from Virginia 6.
No one spoke during the public hearing on Sept. 13.
Boyle said the tower would be constructed out of galvanized metal and would be a free-standing lattice tower construction.
