Joyce Jacqueline Goff Hughes

Joyce Jacqueline Goff Hughes, 84, of Roseland, beloved wife of Lem Hughes, died Feb. 7 after a valiant fight against cancer at her home. Born on Oct. 2, 1927 in Madison Heights, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Howard Goff and Fanny Sue Dodgion Goff. Joyce graduated from Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing as part of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. Upon graduation, she volunteered to help fight the polio epidemic in Little Rock, Ark.

Joyce and Lem moved to Northern Virginia, where they raised their children. Joyce’s lifetime as a registered nurse included emergency room head nurse and assistant director of nursing at Fairfax Hospital. She dedicated her life to others, not only in her career, but also in her constant loving nurture of the family she adored.

Joyce’s natural grace, gentle kindness, unwavering sense of fairness and strong ethical core were exceptional and inspired trust in all she met, many counting her as a mentor, confidant and surrogate mother. Life, to her, was a great adventure, and so she filled hers — and all those she touched — with laughter and joy. She often referred to her loved ones as “my people.” She will be sorely missed by each and every one of them.

Joyce is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Walter Lemmon Hughes; and their children, Susan Carman of Amherst, Jeffrey Hughes and wife, Virginia, of Warrenton, Martha Clatterbuck and husband, Paul, of Lynchburg, and Lucius Hughes of Roseland. She is also survived by her sister, Glynice Fazzi of Richmond; her brother, Raymond Goff Jr. of Clear Brook; her sister-in-law, Diane Cameron of Leesburg; five nieces; eight nephews; her grandchildren, Doris Toledo and husband, Kevin, of Lawrenceville, Ga., Heather Newman of Lynchburg, Aaron Carman of Smyrna, Ga., Joyce Carman of Charlottesville, Joshua Hughes and wife, Jenni, of Columbia, Mo., Jason Hughes of Los Angeles, Calif., James Trout of Peachtree City, Ga., Elizabeth Trout of Greenville, N.C., Lara West and husband, Michael, of Charlottesville, and Danielle Carman and husband, Jeffrey, of Durham, N.C.; and her great-grandchildren, Justin George, Alexis Newman, Spencer Newman, Jonathan George, Brandon Carman, Connor Toledo and Skylar Toledo.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Goff.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to The Hospice of the Piedmont  for their care and support during Joyce’s final days.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Pastor Sam Hughes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Hospice of the Piedmont or to a  charity of your choice.
