Ethel Staton Barbour

Ethel Staton Barbour, 81, of Concord, passed July 26.

Born Feb. 8, 1930 in Buckingham County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Staton and Jerushia Banton Staton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Roy Barbour; a son-in-law, James Stone; five brothers; and four sisters.

Ethel was retired from Central Virginia Training Center and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors especially vegetable and flower gardening and enjoyed cooking for her family and reading.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Wanda Stone, and a daughter-in-law, Susan Barbour, both of Madison Heights; three grandchildren, Gail Wood and husband, Chris, of Evington, Lauren Barbour and Angela Stone; a great-granddaughter, Adriana Barbour and a great-grandson on the way, all of Madison Heights; a brother, Ernest Staton and wife, Betty, of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ethel’s life was conducted July 30 in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service by the Rev. Donnie Stevens. The family received relatives and friends until service time.

William Henry Benz

William Henry Benz, 60, of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away July 27 at his home.

He was born Dec. 23, 1950, in Riverside, Calif., the son of the late Lieutenant Colonel Henry P. Benz and Elsie Mae Dollins Benz.

William was a sergeant in the United States Air Force for ten years. He was employed with the corporate office of Regal Entertainment Group in Knoxville and has written operations manuals and positional manuals used in the field. When in Charlottesville he attended Northside Baptist Church and will be remembered as one who loved the Lord and his family.

Surviving him are two daughters, Beverly Anne Adams and her husband, Mark, of Hillsville, and Jessica Gayle Tyree and her husband, Jeffery, of Amherst; two sons, Charles Andrew Benz and his wife, Kellie, of Amherst, and Thomas Matthew Benz and his wife, Stephanie, of Shipman; nine grandchildren, Eric Staton, Cheyanne Meadows, Jakob Adams, Jarrett Tyree, Jay Tyree, Andrew Benz (expected), Thomas Benz, Jeremiah Benz, and Malcolm Benz; one brother, Charles Edward Benz and his wife, Deborah, of Troy; and one nephew, Charles H. Benz.

A funeral service was held Aug. 1 at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Johnson officiating. Interment with military honors followed in Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family received friends July 31 at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville.

Preston James Branham

Preston James Branham, 73 of Monroe, passed away July 31. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bertie Johns Branham.

Born April 17, 1938, in Amherst, he was the son of the late Alfred and Virginia Johns Branham. He was also preceded in death by a son, William Branham; and a sister, Joanne Staubtiz.

He was retired from Monroe Wood Yard, and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors also include seven children, Percy Johns and wife, Patricia, Wilby Branham and wife, Deborah, Regina Miller, Janet Chittum and husband, Donnie, Mickel Branham and wife, Deborah, Annie May and Curtis Branham; three sisters, Jean Ann, Mamie and Eleanor Branham; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family received friends at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.

A funeral service was conducted Aug. 4 at the funeral home, by the Rev. Alley and Sharon Bryant. Interment followed in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Benjamin Earl Clapp

Benjamin Earl Clapp, 81, of Madison Heights, passed away July 27 at his home. He was the husband of Mackie McCormick Clapp for 60 years. He was born in Evergreen on May 18, 1930 to the late John McHyne Clapp and Ruth Margaret Albright Tickle Clapp.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard E. Clapp, J. Allen Clapp, Enid M. Clapp, John M. Clapp and Hugh H. Clapp.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Denice D. Clapp; son, Clinton E. Clapp, M.D.; five grandchildren, Adrienne Cruser, Meredith Clapp, Leslie Clapp, Devon Clapp and Nolan Clapp; brother, Daniel A. Clapp; and sister, Alice Clapp Martin.

Earl farmed in Evergreen until he joined the U.S. Air Force. Upon returning home he worked at Lynchburg Foundry and later the Woodman of the World Life Insurance Company where he retired as area manager 16 years ago.

Friends joined his family July 30 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Earl’s life followed with Pastor John Franklin and R.B. Moore officiating.

Lydia McLane Cruikshank Daniel

Lydia McLane Cruikshank Daniel, 87, died Aug. 5. She is survived by her husband, Peter Vivian Daniel, vice president and treasurer emeritus of Sweet Briar College. They were married in 1945 in Philadelphia, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Nan Maury Halsey Cruikshank, of Philadelphia, and the late Harrison Cruikshank of Cecil County, Md. Her brother, First Lieutenant Dabney Maury Cruikshank, was killed in action Oct. 16, 1944, in Aachen, Germany, during World War II. Her sister, Julia Ward Cruikshank McIIwaine (Mrs. William Baird McIIwaine III) died in Concord, N.H., on Aug. 19, 1998. Another sister, Helen Halsey Cruikshank Sadtler (Mrs. Seddon Bruce Sadtler) died Aug. 24, 2006. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Peter Vivian Daniel Jr. of Wilton, Conn.; her grandsons, Peter McLane Daniel and William Penn Daniel; and her son, Dabney Maury Daniel and his wife, Margaret McCluer Perry Daniel, of Atlanta, Ga.

Mrs. Daniel grew up in Alexandria, where she developed a strong interest in historic preservation, which she continued throughout her life. She was president of the Lynchburg Historical Foundation Inc. and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest Foundation, which was an early successful effort to restore Poplar Forest. She was chairman of the Lynchburg Committee of the Colonial Dames of America and active in the American Red Cross in Amherst, and the Junior League of Lynchburg.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 13 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg. A reception will follow at St. John’s Church. A private family committal will be held at the Sweet Briar Columbarium on Monument Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg General Endowment Fund, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503; or the Sweet Briar College Friends of the Arts Fund, P. O. Box 1051, Sweet Briar, VA 24595.

Frederick Anthony Mohler

Frederick Anthony Mohler, 81, of Madison Heights, passed away July 31.

Born Jan. 12, 1930, in Lowesville, he was the son of the late Samuel Edward and Susan Wood Mohler. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Frances Mohler, Reva Johnson and Aleen Webb.

Mr. Mohler was a United States Army veteran having served in Korea. He was retired from Rock-Tenn Co., after 37 years of service. He was a member of Piney River Baptist Church, a member of the Moose Lodge in Lynchburg, and of the Bluegrass Music Association.

Survivors include a son, Lenwood A. Mohler, of Madison Heights; a sister, Christophine Mohler, of Lynchburg; a grandson, Lenwood D. Mohler, of Madison Heights; and two great-grandchildren, Layla and Mikayla, other relatives and friends.

The family received friends Aug. 5 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

A funeral service was conducted following the visitation at the funeral home, by Pastor Jason Canipe. Burial was private.

Baynith Cornelius Moore

Baynith Cornelius Moore, 89, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away July 22 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital in Johnson City. He was the husband of the late Dossie Grant Moore.

Born Aug. 30, 1921 in Appomattox County, he was the son of the late Robert William and Mary Grow Moore. He was a retired pilot with Morris Newspaper Corp. with forty-one years of service and a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. Mr. Moore was a member of First United Methodist Church of Johnson City.

Mr. Moore is survived by two sons, Donald B. Moore of Johnson City and Ronald C. Moore and wife, Doloris of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Curtis H. Moore and wife, Joyce, of Madison Heights; one sister, Doris M. Crowell of Lyons, Ohio.

A funeral service was conducted July 30 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family received friends July 29 at the funeral home.

Queen Victoria Myers

Queen Victoria Myers, 46, of Madison Heights, departed this life July 28. Born a twin on April 27, 1965, she was a daughter of the late Susie T. Myers and Cosby Johnson. She graduated from Nelson County High School, where she received her certification as a Nurse’s Aide. Queen also attended Brown Job Training Center and became certified for office processor and OIC for a Home Health aide. Queen lived in Washington, D.C., and worked at George Washington Hospital, the Goodwin House in Alexandria, for Team Nurse in Madison Heights and some private duty in Amherst and Nelson Counties. She also worked at Lovingston Daycare Center, Wintergreen House Keeping as a supervisor and then at Lovingston Health Care Center before her health took a turn for the worst and had to step down from her position.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Kevin Myers, Antonio Myers, both of Madison Heights, Jerry Haley Jr. (Leslie) and Larry Haley; eight sisters, Slinda Loving of Amherst, Daisy Toliver of Piney River, Nancy McClendon of Woodbridge, Elaine Braxton (Walter) of Arrington, Vivian Diggs (Charles) of Amherst, Shirley Myers (Johnny) of Piney River, Jackie Allen (Will) and Arlene Allen; eight brothers, William Jerome Myers of Charlottesville, Wayne Allen, Lincoln Allen of Amherst, William Allen, Earl Allen, Marvin Allen (Shirley), Joseph Allen and Keith Allen; a loving and devoted fiancé, Jerry Haley Sr.; mother-in-law, Ms. Christina Anderson; five sisters-in-law, Charlene Hamilton (Bobby), Patricia Hawkins (Ricky), Holly Haley (Tyronne), Phyllis Frazier-Young (James) and Sadie Braxton; brothers-in-law, Eric Haley Sr. (Marilyn), Ronald Haley, Hillary Haley Sr. (Stephanie) Lindsey; god-children, Alonzo Jones, Sherryl Myers, Emma and Chasity Myers, Sue, C.J. and Michelle Diggs; aunt-in-law, Ms. Grace Anderson of Maryland, Viola Ghoston (Bill) of Washington, D.C., Lena Ambers of Leesburg, and Mammie Hall (Nat); uncles-in-law, Raymond Ambers, Joe Ambers (Marie), Herman Ambers (Jean) and Charles Ambers; a very special patient, Queen thought of Ms. Lucille Gardner of Madison Heights, as a mother figure; very special nieces and nephews, Robert Toliver Jr., Princess (Terria) and my little sunshine, Juleala and Antwon; a number of nieces, nephews and a host of other loving family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lewis Myers and a sister, Patricia Diane Essex.

A funeral service was held Aug. 1 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. Annette Diggs with burial following in Oak Hill Memorial Gardens. The body was in state prior to the funeral service. The repast followed at Elaine Braxton’s home in Arrington.

 

James Edward Parr ‘Jimmy’

James Edward Parr, “Jimmy,” 76, of Amherst passed away Aug. 3. Born in Amherst County April 24, 1935, he was the son of the late Edward Virgil Parr and Carrie Higginbotham Parr and stepson of Nancy Teass Parr. He served in the U.S. Army, was employed for 34 years by the Virginia Department of Transportation and retired as Superintendent of Forks of Buffalo Headquarters in 1998. Jimmy was a founding member of Pedlar Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad and was a dedicated member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Sale Parr; son, Gregory Edward Parr and wife, Gwen; daughter, Susan Parr Bailey and husband, Steve, all of Amherst; five grandchildren, Betsy Bailey, Caroline Bailey, Kendall Parr, Mary Kate Bailey and Brittani Parr; brother-in-law, Ralph Sale and wife, Jackie; sisters-in-law, Mildred Sharman and husband, O.C., and Geneva Watts and husband, Bud.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Janice Arlene Parr and Beatrice Parr Burley.

A funeral service was conducted Aug. 6 at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sal Sallinger and the Rev. Judy Morris with burial following in Mount Pleasant U.M.C. Cemetery. The family received friends Aug. 5 at the church. There was no viewing or visitation at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mount Pleasant U.M. Church or to Pedlar Volunteer Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad.
