Beverly Murphy Fletcher

Beverly Murphy Fletcher, 89, of Nellysford, died peacefully at her home on Dec. 12. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 18, 1922, she was a daughter of the late James Patrick Murphy and Nellie Naomi Larson Murphy. Her family moved to Seattle in 1927. Beverly graduated from Holy Names Academy in 1940 and attended Washington State College, now known as Washington State University. While working in Alaska for Pacific Northern Airlines, she met her future husband, FBI agent George Fletcher, and they were married in 1948.

The couple moved to Roanoke, and settled in Washington D.C. in 1957. While raising her family, she worked at the Wagaman Brawner real estate firm and pursued her favorite pastimes of bowling and collecting antiques. She attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bethesda, where she volunteered at the church’s Opportunity Shop.

George Fletcher passed away in 2005 and she is survived by her children, Richard Fletcher of Oakland, Calif., Fred Fletcher of Nellysford, and Joan Fletcher Keefe of Asheville, N.C.; her sisters, Patricia Case of Easton, Md., and Marilyn Shaw of Sonoma, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Elyse, Erin, Michele and Darren.

 

Amy Marie Holden

Amy Marie Holden, 42, of Shipman, died Dec. 14 at her residence. Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston.

 

John C. Holland Jr.

John C. Holland Jr., 56, of  Oak Ridge Estate, passed peacefully on Dec. 16 at the University of Virginia hospital. Born on Aug. 30, 1955 in Portsmouth, he grew to become a successful husband, father, grandfather, friend and businessman. 

He envisioned the invisible to achieve the impossible in every aspect of his life. He was the president of John C. Holland Enterprises and Hampton Roads Disposal, both located in Suffolk. He served on the board of the Elizabeth Building and Loan and was recently nominated by the governor of Virginia for Waste Management Facility Operators Board.

He was preceded in death and will be welcomed in heaven by his parents, John C. Holland Sr. and Marie Holland. His passing will also reunite him with his son, John C. Holland III, who he has missed dearly over the last twelve years. 

He will be remembered in this world by his beloved wife of 34 years, Rhonda M. Holland; and two daughters, Heather H. Goodwin and husband, JC, and Reagan H. Thompson and husband, Ben. He is also survived by three grandsons, Logan, Lawson and Ledger Goodwin, who will greatly miss their “granddaddy.” Also left to cherish his memory are his siblings, JoAnn Nesson and husband, Ed, and Jeanne Tippett and husband, Bill; many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends who he treasured.

A service was held at The Carriage House at Oak Ridge Estate Dec. 20 immediately followed by a burial service also in Oak Ridge Estate. A memorial service was also be held in Suffolk, on Dec. 28. Details are not yet available. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorial contributions consider donations to either the Food Bank of Nelson County or to the Toys for Tots program in Suffolk.

Fred Glenn McDaniel

Fred Glenn McDaniel passed away on Dec. 13. Mr. McDaniel was born Nov. 15, 1930 in Richmond.

He is survived by his beloved wife, best friend and confidant, Edna Jane Smiley McDaniel; his children, Joy Wetzler (Wayne), Mike McDaniel (Ann), Robin McDorman (Bobby), Courtney Wise (Sean) and Freddy McDaniel (Mary); his siblings, Howard McDaniel and Reuben McDaniel (Joy, deceased); brother-in-law, Ralph Richardson (Norma, deceased); sister-in-law, Marie McDaniel (Allen, deceased); brothers-in-law, James Smiley (Mary), Ronald Smiley (Patricia), Donald Smiley (Lillian) and Robert Smiley (Janice); sisters-in-law, Edith Smiley (Johnny, deceased) and Debra Smiley; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Fred joined the U.S. Army in 1946 at age 15 and was stationed in Yokohama, Japan. While there he was deployed and fought in the Korean War as a member of the 1st Cavalry Division and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1952. He was employed by Virginia Metal Products in Orange County, served as a Plant Manager in Lilburn, Ga., and finally served as the East Coast Plant Manager for International Cold Storage in Covesville, from 1975 until his retirement in 1998. Fred served as the president of the Football Booster Club at Albemarle High School, president of the Dixie Youth Baseball League, was an active coach in many youth sports in Charlottesville in the late 70s and early 80s, and was an ardent supporter of UVA athletics and, later in life, a South Carolina Gamecocks fan as well.

An accomplished guitar player and avid boxing fan his entire life, Fred was also known for his sense of humor, loyalty and independence. At age 81 he had fully embraced the internet era, managing a Linux OS on his home computer, multiple laptops with wireless connectivity, enjoyed his touch-screen Droid smartphone and used his iPad daily. He was particularly fond of emailing back and forth with his older brother Reuben.

The family received friends prior to the service and a memorial service was conducted Dec. 17 at  Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home in South Hill. A celebration of life reception was held immediately following the service.

Albert ‘Al’ Piatt

After a year long battle with cancer, Albert “Al” Piatt went to be with the Lord on Dec. 13. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Al was born in Jermyn, Pa., on Dec. 18, 1934.

Al hunted and fished Nelson County for more than 30 years and retired here 14 years ago after a career as a machinist. Al knew no strangers and was a wonderful and loving family man. He was known by all in the Afton area as the “go to guy” for projects or a helping hand. He always had a joke or a recipe to share. He will be missed by all who knew him and will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Anna and Cyrus Piatt; his brothers, William and John; and sisters, Laura Rotell and Margaret Snedeker.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marjorie; five daughters, Antoinette Piatt, Sally Walnetski and her husband, Kenneth, Barbara Clark and her husband, Steve, Mary Long and her husband, Greg, and Patricia Manchester and her husband, Steve; 12 grandchildren, Katie, Amy, Andy, Kenny, Heather, Rachael, Cameron, Nicholas, Sydney, Alex, Chase and Allyson; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Bentley. He is also survived by his three brothers, Fred, Robert and his wife, Susan, and Earl and his wife, Frances; two sisters, Eleanor Durst and Mary Casey and her husband, Kenneth; a sister-in-law, Ceil Washburn and her husband, Randy; and with many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held Dec. 18 at Church of the Blue Ridge, 9357 Critzer Shop Road, Afton, VA 22920.

Teresa Harris West

Teresa Harris West, 51, of Shipman, died Dec. 16. Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston.

 

James Urban Wood

James Urban Wood, 74, of Burkes Lane, Lovingston, died Dec. 16 at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. Born Sept. 19, 1937 in Nelson County, he was the son of the late James Benjamin Wood and Elizabeth Urban Wood. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Caroline Tinnell.

Jimmy, as most knew him, was raised in Nelson County and was a retired Operations Manager from the Central Virginia Electric Coop with over 43 years of service. He was a member of Kingswood Baptist Church and a member of Fleetwood Harmony Lodge #92 AF&AM for over 50 years.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Lee Burkes Wood; his daughter, Amy W. Shepherd and husband, Bill; his son, David Wood and wife, Wendy; his sister, Norma W. Knight and husband, Willard; four grandchildren, Allen and Kevin Wood, Amber Truslow and husband, Justin, and Elizabeth Shepherd; and two great-grandchildren, Davaney Truslow and Jimmy Wood.

A funeral service was held Dec. 19 at Calvary Baptist Church, in Lovingston, with the Rev. Carroll Martin and Pastor A.C. Smith officiating. Members of Fleetwood Harmony Lodge #92 will accord AF&AM Masonic Rites at the church.

The family received friends following the service at the church and all other times at the family residence.

The family suggest that flowers be omitted and contributions in Jimmy’s memory be sent to Fleetwood Harmony Lodge, P.O. Box 172, Lovingston, VA 22949; or Kingswood Baptist Church, P.O. Box 104, Arrington, VA 22922.
