Skating to the theme of “The Greatest Show on Ice,” 21 members of the Lynchburg Figure Skating Club brought back a gold medal from their ISI World Team Championships in Boston late last month, competing in the medium production team category. The competition included more than 1,400 skaters representing 25 states and three foreign countries.

The club skated to the theme in several competitions in Virginia and Maryland that resulted in gold medal performances convincing coaches Yvonne Nelson-Reid and Kyle Smith to set their sights on the ISI World Team Championships.

Practice continued through July for those skaters that committed to make the trip, by plane, train or automobile. Team members included Rachel Anderson, Delaney Armenti, Jenny Burleigh, Avery Campbell, Yancy Campbell, Samantha Chalker, Lauren Cote, Valerie Cote, Emily Gallagher, Holly Harkins, Anna Johnson, Lydia Johnson, Rachel Lee, Taylor Mennenga, Gracyn Nelson-Reid, Jimmi Nelson-Reid, Lisa Pyle, Kyle Smith, Valerie Steineman, Lexie Vlahos and Walker Vlahos.

Some of the club’s skaters also skated in individual categories and did a tremendous job as well. The team earned points throughout the week for all events skated and placed 34th out of 104 teams. Smith (artistic program) and an ensemble team that included Jimmi Nelson-Reid, Lydia Johnson, Anna Johnson and Pyle each earned gold medals and were invited to participate in the Benefit Show featuring U.S. National champion and Olympic skater Rachel Flatt.

The Lynchburg Figure Skating Club started a theatre team three years ago, previously performing to “Hairspray” and “Wonka on Ice.” It has earned gold medals in every competition it has participated in with elaborate costumes, props and backdrops used as a part of the performance. The Club also sponsors a “Learn to Skate” program that begins Sept. 13 and a “Christmas on Ice” show, scheduled for Dec. 11, with practices also starting in September. These programs are available to all age groups and skill levels. Pick up a brochure at Liberty University’s LaHaye Ice Center or visit www.lynchburgfsc.com.
