The Nelson County High School Govs soccer team will be defending its Dogwood District crown without last season’s leading scorer, Brandon White, who graduated along with several other key players.
Last year’s team went 15-3-2 and lost to George Mason in the regional semifinals.
The Govs also lost goalie Matt Vanison, but not completely as he is coaching this year’s players.
The Govs will have their entire midfield back as Albert Lachance, Juan Garcia and Logan Harris bring four years of experience with them.
Also back are defensive starters Austin Truslow and Daniel Vanison.
Head coach Jeff Harris, who is in his second year at the helm, has his team’s goals already set.
“Our main goal for the season is to win districts again. I have coached these players for four years (two as an assistant), they are a great group of kids and a talented group of players. This team has the drive and focus to achieve whatever thet set their sights on, so we will have to see how far they want to go,” Harris said.
The Govs open the regular season on March 22 at home, hosting Amherst.
