The Nelson Govs basketball squad lost two Dogwood District games last week, but the biggest loss came when Thomas Napper went down with an injured knee at Altavista in a 62-52 defeat at the hands of the Colonels.
“After his injury we were never the same,” Govs coach Brandon Garrett said. “Sometimes a team will rally around a fallen teammate and sometimes it will take the air right out of them. In our case, it took the air out.
“It’s sad to see a kid who puts everything he has in to it like Thomas go down with that type of injury. Basketball-wise he was really coming on and gave us an inside presence, but more importantly he is a great kid that we are really going to miss.”
Napper tore his meniscus in two places. One of the tears does not allow him to extend his leg. The injury requires surgery.
Govs’ Adam Pickett recorded a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
In a 65-60 loss to Gretna, Pickett scored 24 points and Tyler Vest added 13.
“We played just well enough to hang around. We didn’t execute down the stretch,” Garrett said. “That was a very winnable game for us, but I’ve said that a lot this year. Bottom line is we have to be consistent all the way around. Right now we are not, and we are running out of time. All year long we have had this Jekyll-and-Hyde look. One quarter we play great and the next we look like it’s our first scrimmage.”
