Nelson girls basketball first-year standout Emily Stotmeister not only made an impact on the Lady Govs’ squad, but the Wisconsin transfer left a major mark on her opponents.
The scrappy junior was recently named the Dogwood District Player of the Year.
She not only led the Nelson team in scoring, but was one of the toughest players to wear the green and gold on the court since Jasmine Murphy, another POY for Nelson.
Stotmeister would never hesitate to dive on the floor for loose balls or to mix it up under the basket with her opponents while fighting for the ball or a shot until a whistle was blown.
One of few bright spots for Nelson coach Debbie Whitmore’s season was having Stotmeister pour in 333 points in 20 games played.
Stotmeister was injured and did not play in the second game against Amherst.
On the boards, Stotmeister hauled down 259 rebounds and on defense she recorded 107 steals.
Also on the defensive side, Stotmeister had 26 blocks.
In the assist category, she dished out 55 and that number would had been higher if her teammates had converted more shots off her passes.
On the foul line, Stotmeister canned a cool 63 shots out of 87 attempted.
Now that the basketball season has ended Stotmeister will grab her glove and bat and get ready for softball for the Lady Govs under new head coach Matt McGarry.
