The Nelson baseball team took advantage of the recent warm weather and the new Virginia High School League rule to get a jump on the basics.
Nelson coach Scott McGarry explained the new rule.
“Basically, in the past, all coaches and teams were allowed to do was conduct weight training and general physical conditioning during the offseason which lasted from the end of the previous year’s season until the first official practice date for the next year’s season,” McGarry said. “The new rule allows coaches to conduct practices and sport-specific training in addition to the weight lifting and running throughout the year. Ten-day dead periods are observed at the beginning of each season — fall, winter, spring, as well as a summer dead period the first full week of July. Nothing is allowed during the dead periods except for the teams who are in season at that time.
“The rule is a significant change that now gives the high school coaches more opportunities to interact with student-athletes throughout the year in a chosen sport. We can now organize and supervise team activities and training that in the past would have been in direct violation of the out-of-season practice rule.”
The Govs recently attended a baseball camp at Radford and McGarry said it was the best camp he has ever taken his team.
