Nelson Govs baseball coach Scott McGarry held a camp last week and former Major League player Reggie Harris was a guest director.
Harris, a pitcher from Waynesboro was drafted in the first round (26th pick overall) of the 1987 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox. He made his MLB debut in 1990 with the Oakland Athletics and received an AL Championship ring that year when the A’s swept Boston in four games. Cincinnati defeated Oakland in the World Series.
Harris pitched in the big leagues for five different teams (Oakland, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston and Milwaukee) during a career that spanned more than 15 years. He finished with 121 innings, 95 strikeouts, and a 4.91 era. He also had more than 200 innings pitched in AAA ball.
Harris was recently offered a coaching position with the minor league Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
“Reggie took our guys through a pro-style warm-up and agility session, followed by a long-toss throwing progression,” McGarry said. “During the remainder of the three-hour clinic, Reggie conducted individual bullpen sessions with a dozen prospective pitchers from the middle and high schools. The remaining 20 participants rotated through a variety of hitting stations with the Nelson basball staff. The afternoon of baseball concluded with a typical ballpark meal — hot dogs and Gatorade.”
